Springfield College to host girls' softball clinic

SPRINGFIELD Girls ages 10 through 15 will have opportunities to learn softball skills from former coaches and members of the Springfield College Softball Team at a free clinic on Aug. 2 from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Springfield College's Potter Field. A free cookout and alumnae softball game will follow.

Heading the coaching lineup will be Springfield College Softball Coach and Associate Professor of Physical Education Kathy Mangano, three-time NEWMAC Coach of the Year. Other participating former Springfield College softball coaches will be Diane Potter, member of the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame for whom the Springfield College softball field is named, and Lynn Johnson, who also was assistant softball coach at the University of Vermont.

Also coaching will be former Springfield College softball team members including Diane Schumacher, member of the national and international softball halls of fame.

The clinic is designed for beginner through experienced players. Girls will be grouped by their skill levels and will rotate through stations to learn or improve skills in hitting, pitching, fielding, throwing and catching.

Following the clinic, there will be a free cookout at noon, and girls may attend the Springfield College softball alumnae game, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

The Springfield College Alumni Relations Office is accepting advance registration by telephone at 748-3161. Girls may also register at the event.
