Felix Sparks WSU off The Bench
WESTFIELD – Freshman center Gabby Felix of Springfield was the only player to reach double figures with 11 points off the bench for the WSU women’s basketball team in a 63-37 loss to Salve Regina on Dec. 10.
She followed up that effort by scoring eight of her 10 points in the opening six minutes to spark the Owls to a 54-47 victory over UMass Boston on Dec. 13.
Berthiaume Continues to Lead
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Alex Berthiaume Springfield poured in a game-high 22 points to lead the Springfield College men’s basketball to a 52-44 victory at Connecticut College on Dec. 13.
Berthiaume was 6-for-16 from the field but converted 3-of-6 shots from long distance and 7-of-8 shots from the charity stripe for the Pride.
Madera Strong at USM Tri-Meet
GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Zack Madera of Southwick placed third in the short sprint and second in the 200-meter dash as the WSU men’s indoor track and field team earned a second place finish at the University of Southern Maine indoor track and field tri-meet on Saturday, Dec. 10.
Foster Sets AIC Record
CAMBRIDGE – Junior Sanya Foster of Springfield placed second in the shot put with a school-record throw of 12.74 meters and took 17th in the weight throw with a toss of 11.55 meters for the American International College (AIC) women’s indoor track and field team at the Harvard Open on Dec. 10.
Sophomore Jenna Miller of Chicopee placed fourth in the high jump after clearing 1.55 meters.
Locals Named to All-Region Teams
KANSAS CITY, Kan. – AIC women’s soccer’s sophomore back Allie Fitzsimmons of West Springfield was named a second-team All-East Region selection by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Fitzsimmons, who also earned first-team Northeast-10 all-conference honors, started in 12 of her 13 games played in her first season at AIC. She contributed one goal and two assist for four points on the offensive end of the field.
Elms College sophomore midfielder Gianna Gorneault of Springfield was named Third Team All-New England Region as recently announced by the NSCAA for women’s soccer.
