Springfield Rugby Club to host annual Sevens Tournament |
|
June 18, 2012
HOLYOKE The Springfield Rugby Football Club will be hosting the 20th Annual Eric White Memorial Rugby Sevens Tournament at Crosier Field in Holyoke on June 23 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Rugby teams from across New England and New York will compete in the following men's and women's divisions: Qualifier, Open and Social brackets.
Rugby Sevens is a fast paced, shorten version of traditional rugby. Teams are made up of seven players instead of the usual 15. Matches are shorter with two seven-minute halves with a minute break at half time. Teams will compete in a tournament with multiple matches in the day.
Rugby Sevens is popular at all levels of rugby with club tournaments, which generally take place throughout the summer months. The International Olympic Committee recently voted to allow Rugby Sevens to be played in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
"The Springfield Rugby Football Club has hosted this rugby event for the past 20 years." Bruce Adams, president of the Springfield Rugby Football Club, said. "Now that Rugby Sevens will be in the Olympics, the popularity of rugby is sure to grow in Western Mass. and beyond."
The event is free to the public with ample parking for spectators. Trophies will be awarded to the top three places in each division along with a men's and women's MVP award. Once again this year, the Eric White Sportsmanship Award will be presented at the awards ceremony.
"We remember our team mate Eric White." Bill Welch, Springfield Rugby Football Club treasurer, said. "It's a fine tribute to this past player of the club."
The Springfield Rugby Football Club will wrap up the summer sevens and prepare for the fall league season in late August.
