Walker selected to NEFC first team

WESTFIELD ­– Westfield State University (WSU) football's senior defensive lineman Chris Walker of West Springfield was selected to the 2012 New England Football Conference All-Division first team.

Walker was also a first-team selection during his sophomore season, earning first-team honors for the third straight year despite being sidelined with injuries for three games this season. Walker posted 32 tackles, including 10 for losses and a team-high five quarterback sacks from his defensive end position.

Hall makes Little East second team

WESTFIELD – WSU senior forward Liz Hall of Southwic was selected to the Little East field hockey all-conference second team.

Hall was the sixth leading scorer in the 12-team conference with 33 points (11 goals, 11 assists). Her 11 assists are the second best single-season total in school history.

Bovat tabbed rookie of the year

WESTFIELD – WSU freshman women's soccer player Ashley Bovat of Westfield was selected the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference rookie of the year after she tallied 14 points for the Owls. Felix named to MASCAC honor roll

BUZZARDS BAY – Springfield's Gabby Felix, the Westfield State University women's basketball team's sophomore center, was named to the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference honor roll after she earned all-tournament accolades for the Owls at the Westfield State Tip-Off Tournament.

During the tournament, she averaged 16 points and 8.5 rebounds, including a double-double effort of 17 points and 12 boards in a 52-38 title game setback to Castleton State. Felix also scored a game-high 15 points in the Owls' 56-40 victory over Drew (N.J.) University in the opening round of the Tip-Off Tournament.

She shot 52 percent (10-19) from field.

On Nov. 20, Felix continued her strong play with 18 points and 11 rebounds as the Owls cruised to a 72-43 victory over Mount Ida College.

Berthiaume earns Player of the Week honor

WELLESLEY – Senior Alex Berthiaume was chosen as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week after powering Springfield to a pair of wins over the weekend.

The preseason All-American started off the year in impressive fashion, leading Springfield a pair of victories at the Bridgewater Tip-Off Classic. Berthiaume averaged 25.5 points, six assists, and five boards per game while shooting 54.5 percent (18-33) from the floor as he was named the Most Outstanding player.

In an 86-84 overtime win over Becker, Berthiaume reached the 30-point plateau for the fourth time in his career while adding eight assists and six boards. In the championship game, the reigning NEWMAC Player of the Year netted 21 points and dished out four helpers in an 88-75 victory against Bridgewater State.

Taylor's offense, defense key in season opening win

WALTHAM – West Springfield's Emily Taylor notched eight points and four steals as the Springfield College women's basketball team opened up the season with a 54-50 win over Trinity in the Brandeis Invitational on Nov. 17.
