West Springfield residents help bring WNEC volleyball glory

SPRINGFIELD West Springfield residents Rachel Cervone and Inna Sergeychik each completed a successful campaign on the Western New England College women's volleyball squad, which finished the season at the .500 mark with a 17-17 record.

The Golden Bears also placed sixth in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) with a 6-6 mark and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament after upsetting third-seeded University of New England in the first round of the playoffs.

Cervone, a junior outside hitter, played in all 34 matches and led the team in kills (326), digs (430) and tied for second in services aces (50) in 114 games. Her best outing was a 29-kill, 30-dig performance against Gordon.

She was named to the All-TCCC First Team and was a WNEC Female Athlete-of-the-Week.

A Business Management major, Cervone is a 2006 graduate of West Springfield High School where she was standout volleyball, basketball and softball performer.

In volleyball she served as team captain her senior year, was an All-League and All-Scholastic selection her junior and senior years, and an All-American.

Cervone was a recipient of the Coaches Awards in basketball and was also a senior captain, MVP, and All-League and All-Scholastic in softball.

Sergeychik, a freshman middle blocker/outside hitter, compiled 66 kills and 42 digs in 16 matches (44 games). She had season bests of nine kills against Westfield State and eight digs against SUNY Oneonta.

A Biology major, Sergeychik is a 2008 graduate of West Springfield High School where she was a three-year member of the girl's volleyball team and also ran track and field for one season.
