Wilbraham's Szydlowski named to NEFC All-Division team

WESTFIELD – Senior defensive back Mike Szydlowski of Wilbraham was selected to the 2012 New England Football Conference All-Division second team.

In nine games this season, Szydlowski intercepted six passes – good for second in the conference – broke up an additional 14 and recorded 46 total tackles.

Felix named to MASCAC honor roll

BUZZARDS BAY – Springfield's Gabby Felix, the Westfield State University women's basketball team's sophomore center, was named to the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference honor roll after she earned all-tournament accolades for the Owls at the Westfield State Tip-Off Tournament.

During the tournament, she averaged 16 points and 8.5 rebounds, including a double-double effort of 17 points and 12 boards in a 52-38 title game setback to Castleton State. Felix also scored a game-high 15 points in the Owls' 56-40 victory over Drew (N.J.) University in the opening round of the Tip-Off Tournament.

She shot 52 percent (10-19) from field.

On Nov. 20, Felix continued her strong play with 18 points and 11 rebounds as the Owls cruised to a 72-43 victory over Mount Ida College.

Berthiaume earns Player of the Week honor

WELLESLEY – Senior Alex Berthiaume was chosen as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week after powering Springfield College to a pair of wins over the weekend.

The preseason All-American started off the year in impressive fashion, leading Springfield a pair of victories at the Bridgewater Tip-Off Classic. Berthiaume averaged 25.5 points, six assists, and five boards per game while shooting 54.5 percent (18-33) from the floor as he was named the Most Outstanding player.

In an 86-84 overtime win over Becker, Berthiaume reached the 30-point plateau for the fourth time in his career while adding eight assists and six boards. In the championship game, the reigning NEWMAC Player of the Year netted 21 points and dished out four helpers in an 88-75 victory against Bridgewater State.

Following his receipt of the honor, Berthiaume led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points in just 13 minutes to help the Pride to its third-straight victory to open the season as it bested Lyndon State 87-60 on Nov. 20.

Phillips named Maroon Athlete of the Week

SPRINGFIELD – Callie Phillips of the Springfield College women's swimming team has been named this week's Springfield College Female Maroon Athlete of the Week. A freshman from East Longmeadow, Phillips won two events and finished second in a third in the Pride's split in a tri-meet last Saturday at the Art Linkletter Natatorium versus Keene State and Wheaton.

The physical therapy major won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.76, and the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:14.28. She also placed second in the 100-yard free with a time of 54.41 seconds.

Skiffington posts solid numbers in loss

HOLYOKE – Junior forward Kayla Skiffington of East Longmeadow recorded ten points and six rebounds for the Bay Path College women's basketball team, but the Wildcats fell 80-57 in their home opener to the BlueJays of University of St. Joseph on Nov. 20.

Mickiewicz hot from the outside in losing effort

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Junior guard Ryan Mickiewicz scored 15 points on five 3-pointers, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Bears' comeback attempt fell short in a 72-63 loss Saturday to Bowdoin College in the third-place game of the 32nd annual Tip-Off Classic at Eastern Connecticut State University.
