WILBRAHAM The State Farm City of Palms Basketball Classic, in its 39th year and considered a “top five” national high school basketball tournament, will include Wilbraham & Monson Academy (WMA) during its Dec. 16 to 21, run.
Six nationally ranked teams and 10 of the top 100 high school seniors will participate in the field. The tournament will take place at Bishop Verot High School in Fort Myers, Fla.
Coached by former University of Pennsylvania assistant Chris Sparks, the WMA basketball team continues to raise its profile by participating in prestigious tournaments. Sparks said the team would also participate in an international basketball tournament in the Netherlands, the Rinus De Jong, this month.
The Rinus de Jong Invitational, in only its second year, has become a truly successful youth basketball club team tournament in Europe. The idea of the Rinus de Jong Invitational was to attract top European teams to Dutch soil and pit them against the best Dutch players in order to give players the necessary level of competition to further their basketball development. As the only group invited from the United States, the WMA basketball team will play in a televised event. Sparks has been invited to speak as a guest lecturer during the coaches’ portion of the event.
The WMA basketball program gained national attention last year when former WMA student Enosch Wolf joined the University of Connecticut (UConn) for their eventual NCAA tournament run that ended in UConn winning the national championship game this past spring.
Among the teams participating in the City of Palms Basketball Classic are Mater Dei of Santa Ana, Calif.; Miller Grove of Lithonia, Georgia; Academy from Ulm, Germany.
