CAMBRIDGE -- University of New Hampshire linebacker Matt Evans and Westfield State University receiver and running back Evan Berneche of Chicopee received the New England Football Writers' Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Gold Helmet Awards for week seven of the 2010 football season.
Berneche, a graduate of Chicopee Comprehensive High School, made his first start at running back in a 26-15 victory over Coast Guard. Berneche rushed 37 times for 236 yards and a touchdown. His 33-yard rush for a score gave the Owls an early 7-0 lead.
Berneche also broke off a 60-yard rush to the Coast Guard one setting up another Westfield State touchdown.
He also caught a pass for four yards and returned a punt for nine yards. Showing even more versatility, he had a 15-yard pass completion on a fake punt called back on a penalty. Berneche is currently Westfield State's leading receiver with 461 yards over seven games, almost 200 yards greater than the next player. For his efforts on the ground this week, Berneche was also named Co-Offensive Player of the Week in the New England Football Conference.
