WNEC athletes earn accolades

SPRINGFIELD — Western New England College (WNEC) sophomore Anthony Medina of Springfield was honored March 2 as the Western New England Male Athlete of the Week. Freshman Alan Martin of Monson earned a similar award on Feb. 23.

Medina finished fourth in the 141-pound weight class at the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Championship to earn All-New England recognition for the second straight year. He captured three of five matches during the two-day tournament.

Last year, Medina placed fourth in the 133-pound division at the NEWA Championship. A sustainability major, Medina led the team with a 25-11 record this past season. He has a 50-18 mark (73.5 percent) in two years.

Martin, a forward on the men's hockey squad, netted three points in a pair of wins as the Golden Bears qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast Tournament for the first time since 2000. He scored the winning goal in a 3-2 victory at Nichols, then contributed a pair of assists (including one on the game-winner) in a 3-2 overtime decision over Suffolk.

A chemistry major, Martin was also selected the ECAC Northeast Player of the Week on Feb. 21.

He finished his successful rookie campaign with seven points (four goals, three assists), which included a short-handed goal and two game-winning shots.
