SPRINGFIELD – Continuum Performance Center of East Longmeadow breaks new ground by offering athletes at Western New England University (WNE) a specialized program; assisting the men's lacrosse team with off-season training, as well as focusing on injury prevention.
CPC coaches are commuting from their 18 Maple Court residence, to the WNE University Campus to provide athletes with the tools and conditioning techniques they need in order to take the Division III athletics program to a more competitive level.
For the next six weeks, CPC Owner Geoff Sullivan and Chris Worrell, director of Strength and Conditioning, will work with the men's lacrosse team at Western New England University. Their goal? To help these athletes increase strength, endurance and lateral mobility before the spring season. Sullivan and Worrell will work with the Golden Bears' three times a week, pushing them to their limits. "The program is amazingly in-depth.
Each day has its own unique focus," explained Sullivan.
Worrell added, "The sessions consist of a periodized program."
A periodized program that this CPC duo developed especially for the Golden Bears' lacrosse team. It combines CPC's signature boot camp of basic human movement patterns and high intensity cardio intervals; traditional weightlifting pattern individually tracked for every athlete; and a metabolic mixture which includes balance, strength, and agility.
WNE University athletes will learn the importance of conditioning in the off-season, and when the program is followed correctly, they should see significant results during regular season. "Their strength/power, agility, change of direction, and overall performance will improve. This will also aid in injury prevention," explains Worrell.
With the constant pressure for student athletes to perform above expectation, injury prevention is a hot topic on and off the field. According to a recent study in the Journal of Athletic Training's March/April 2012 issue, "Over use injuries occur in long training sessions or with repeated movement, making up 30% of all injuries sustained by collegiate athletes, and 62% occurring in female athletes."
Sullivan and Worrell believe that by engaging athletes in a healthy routine, and helping them realize their true athletic potential, that it will reduce the amount of over use injuries this team may endure without proper education.
Sullivan said, "All athletes need to know that training for any sport is work. But, with a balanced routine, hard work, and patience comes results."
