WNE second baseman named to D3baseball.com All-America list

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The staff of D3baseball.com named Western New England University (WNE) senior Tim Clark to the second team of its preseason all-America list on Wednesday. All told, 44 players were placed on three preseason all-America teams by the website devoted to national coverage of NCAA Division III baseball.

Clark, a second baseman from West Springfield who attended Avon Old Farms School in Avon, Conn., made the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division III All-America First Team and D3baseball.com All-America Second Team as a junior. He was the recipient of the ABCA Gold Glove Award after making only six errors in 244 chances for a .975 fielding percentage. He led the Golden Bears in batting (.428), hits (80), triples (5), slugging (.551) and on-base percentage (.464). He also was the CCC Player of the Year and an All-NEIBA First Team honoree.

Berthiaume named NEWMAC Player of the Week



Springfield College's (SC) Alex Berthiaume was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors.

Berthiaume, who hails from Springfield, was tremendous on the offensive side of the ball, averaging 22 points per game while shooting 17-for-29 (58.6 percent) from the field.

He opened the week with a dominating performance in a 92-51 over Wheaton, pouring in 28 points in just 26 minutes of action. Berthiaume went connected on 10 of his 13 field goal attempts, including all six of his bids from downtown.

On Saturday, he led the Pride to its fifth-straight win as he tallied 16 points in a 66-65 come-from-behind win at Clark.

Felix leads WSU over Fitchburg State



FITCHBURG – Sophomore center Gabby Felix of Springfield scored 18 points to lead Westfield State University (WSU) to an 82-52 victory over Fitchburg State University in women's basketball on Jan. 22.

LaFlamme records career high for Elms



CHICOPEE – Elms' freshman center Melissa LaFlamme of West Springfield had her best shooting performance hitting on 5-of-7 from the field en route to a collegiate career-high 10 points as the Blazers women's basketball team secured a 74-45 victory over Southern Vermont College on Jan. 22.

Cox propels WSU to victory



BRIDGEWATER – South Hadley's Katie Cox placed first in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:08.70) and 100-yard freestyle (59.33) and was part of a winning 200-yard medley relay as the WSU women's swimming and diving team posted a 163-129 victory over Bridgewater State University on Jan. 20.

AIC women's track places fifth at URI invitational



KINGSTON, R.I. – Junior Jenna Miller of Chicopee placed fifth in the high jump after clearing 1.55 meters as the American International College women's track & field team placed fifth of eight teams at the University of Rhode Island's Sorlien Memorial Invitational on Jan. 20.

Senior Sanya Foster of Springfield placed fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 13.50 meters and took fifth in the shot put with a throw of 12.09 meters.

SC falls to Williams



WILLIAMSTOWN – Springfield's Michael Normoyle was the runner up after touching in 59.51 in the 100-yard breaststrokie, before later placing second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:11.40 as the SC men's swimming and diving team dropped a 189-106 decision to Williams College on Jan. 19.

Westfield's Kelsey Poole finished second the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:15.25 in the women's team's 187-108 loss.

Ruell wins backstroke in victory over Norwich



CHICOPEE – Tricia Ruell of Chicopee touched the wall first in the 50-meter backstroke (36.62) as the Elms College women's swimming and diving team posted a 121-62 victory over Norwich University on Jan. 19.

Gabrielle Calvanese of Agawam finished second the 50-meter breaststroke and the 100-meter breaststroke with respective times of 43.74 and 1:36.89.

Junior Aaron Starke of Chicopee notched a pair of first place finishes in the 50-meter freestyle (26.63) and the 50-meter butterfly (30.32), but the men's team fell 159-87.

Pickett's strong second half helps Elms top Becker



CHICOPEE Elms College sophomore forward JC Pickett of Chicopee made an impact in the second half, scoring all nine of her points during the stanza and totaled eight rebounds in the game to help pace the Blazers women's basketball team to a 63-52 victory over Becker College on Jan. 17.

WNE women's swimming laps Elms College



SPRINGFIELD – Sophomore Chelsea Miemiec of Westfield was a multiple winner, touching the finish line of the 1000-yard freestyle in 12:58.07 and 100-yard freestyle in 1:04.40, which is a personal-best as the Western New England University women's swimming and diving team posted a 126-75 victory over the Elms College in a women's swim meet on Jan. 16.

She also scored two points in the 50 breaststroke with a fourth-place showing in 40.03.

Elms junior Gabrielle Calvanese of Agawam notched first place honors in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 37.71.

In addition to her first place finish, Calvanese touched the wall third in the 50-yard breaststroke (39.39) and the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:29.08.

Junior Stephanie Konstantinidis of Holyoke added second place honors in the 50-yard butterfly (44.60) and was fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:20.56) and the 1000-yard freestyle (15:23.70).

The Elms 200-yard freestyle relay team that included Calvanese and Konstantinidis also won the closing event with a time of 2:08.62.

Elms to host soccer clinic



CHICOPEE – The Elms College women's soccer program will host its January clinic on Jan. 26 from 9 to 11 a.m. This clinic is open to any high school aged female soccer player.
