WESTFIELD — Westfield State University (WSU) athletics are shaping up to have some strong teams this season, a fact that has not escaped the eye of other coaches in the conference.

The Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) recently released its pre-season coaches polls for baseball, softball and track and field, and coaches agree that the Owls should be near the top of the field in all three sports.

The Owls men's track and field team was the unanimous favorite, collecting all five first place votes to amass 25 points while the WSU women's track team garnered 21 points, including one first-place vote, to get edged out for first place by Worcester State, who had four first-place votes and 24 total points.

WSU and Bridgewater State were the pre-season picks to share the 2012 MASCAC softball championship in a vote of the league's coaches. Bridgewater State captured three first place votes, while defending conference regular season co-champion Westfield State grabbed two first place votes as each school amassed 52 points in sharing the top spot in the poll.

WSU baseball, the defending conference regular season champion, received a total of 59 points in its poll, including three first place votes, good for second place, behind only Bridgewater State, the defending league tournament champion, which claimed five first place votes to amass 61 points.
