Zina earns top weekly NECC honor in men's cross country

ATTLEBORO – Ludlow's Jesse Zina earned New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) weekly honors for the Elms College men's cross country team as announced by the league on Sept. 24.

Zina earned NECC Player of the Week honors after setting a new Blazers course school record, notching a time of 32:12 to finish 43rd overall. Zina surpassed Chris Biron whose mark of 32:14 set in 2004 was the previous course record by an Elms runner. This is Zina's first weekly award of the season.

Ludlow natives named to MASCAC weekly honor roll

BUZZARDS BAY – Ludlow's Brittanie McGregor, a senior forward for the Westfield State University (WSU) women's soccer team scored three goals in a 2-0 week for the Owls, including a pair of markers that included the game-winner in 3-1 victory at Eastern Connecticut, earning her a spot on the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) weekly honor roll.

The Worcester State University men's soccer team's goalkeeper Nick Zucco, also from Ludlow, made five saves for a shutout in the Lancers' scoreless draw at Bridgewater State to get his name on the list.

Morin, Wildcats win again

CAMBRIDGE – Wildcats sophomore Stephanie Morin of Springfield defeated Hannah Phalen 7-5, 6-0 in second singles before teaming with Symone Watson to win 8-0 in top doubles play as Bay Path College knocked off host Lesley University, 8-1, in NECC women's tennis play on Sept. 26.

Pereira assists AIC victory

SPRINGFIELD – Senior midfielder Kevin Pereira of Ludlow assisted the game-tying goal as the American International College men's soccer team earned a 4-1 Northeast-10 victory over the Chargers of New Haven on Sept. 26 at Ronald J. Abdow field.

Rurak leads Elms to Blazers' Invitational win

GRANBY – Elms College senior Phil Rurak of Wilbraham shot a one-over-par 73 to earn part of a triple share of individual medalist honors, and the Blazers earned a team score of 309 to win the Blazers' Invitational on Sept. 25 afternoon at Westover Golf Course.

Freshman Lana O'Connor of East Longmeadow notched an 85.

Miller scores for red-hot Owls

WESTFIELD – Senior Kayley Miller of Ludlow capped the scoring in the 68th minute with a blast under the crossbar from 30 yards as the undefeated WSU women's soccer team took a 3-0 non-conference victory over Smith College on Sept. 26.

Mack helps Blazers to win

CHICOPEE – Freshman outside hitter Alexandra Mack of Wilbraham recorded eight kills to help propel the Blazers women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-18) sweep of Pine Manor College on Sept. 25.

Butcher gets shutout in SFU victory

LORETTO, Pa. – East Longmeadow's Brianna Butcher picked up her second shutout of the season and came within one save of her season-high as the Saint Francis University women's soccer team scored a 3-0 win over Mount St. Mary's on Sept. 21.

DaCruz's goal not enough

NEWPORT, R.I. – Ludlow's Shawn DaCruz scored with 30 seconds left in regulation for the Western New England University men's soccer team, but Salve Regina scored with 18 seconds remaining in the first overtime to give host Salve Regina a 2-1 sudden-victory on Sept. 22.
