Community Outlook 2021: Agawam Lions Club, Foundation eager to get back to what they do best

Feb. 22, 2021 |

The Agawam Lions Club and Agawam Lions Foundation Inc. look forward to continuing in our long-standing tradition of community service and support as we embark on 2021. Although the pandemic limited our ability to host events in 2020, we are proud that we were able to safely and creatively support our community with such projects as our Pop-Up Pantry, School Supply Drive, Holiday Meal Baskets, and through the continuance of our recycled eyeglasses program.

Looking forward to 2021, the Agawam Lions team is eager to resume our work in the community to the fullest extent possible as safety and current guidelines permit. The best way to stay in the know about what we’re up to is to follow us on Facebook at @LionsClubAgawam or www.facebook.com/lionsclubagawam.

The Agawam Lions fundraising event that we are perhaps most well known for is our restaurant on the grounds of the Eastern States Exposition. The 105th Big E is scheduled to take place Sept. 17 through Oct. 3, 2021 and will be the Agawam Lions’ 60th year at the fair. We are always adding new menu items while offering highly sought after staples such as our barbecue chicken. All proceeds from our restaurant fund the many causes, programs, and community initiatives that we support. We invite you to come on down and eat for a cause!

Beyond the Big E, other Agawam Lions events that we hope to see continue in 2021 are our annual comedy show, corned beef and cabbage dinner, pancake breakfasts (spring and fall), and food concessions at the Agawam Summer Concert series. The Agawam Lions also run various ad hoc projects including but not limited to our food pantry events, school supply drive and other student support initiatives, veterans initiatives, diabetes awareness and support projects, and other fundraising events and programs as needs arise.

A fundamental cause that the Agawam Lions are committed to addressing is vision related causes such as combatting preventable blindness, supporting treatments and therapies, and improving quality of life and access for the visually impaired. In 2021, Agawam Lions will continue their work in support of Mass. Lions Eye Research Fund, Inc. (MLERF) which aims to further research, development, and access to cutting edge therapies and treatments for those affected by vision loss. To date, Agawam Lions have proudly donated in excess of $550,000 to support the important work of MLERF, Inc.

Whatever 2021 may bring our way, Agawam Lions are committed to safely serving and supporting our community through volunteerism, fundraising, and meeting needs as they arise. Be safe, be well, and best wishes to all in 2021!
