AGAWAM – HP Hood LLC has purchased the old Southworth Paper manufacturing plant for $3.55 million.

The 146,000-square-foot building is directly adjacent to the milk plant on 265 Main St. According to Marc Strange, Agawam’s director for planning and community development, there are currently no set plans for what Hood may use the old building for.

“We don’t have any plans from Hood yet on their presumed expansion,” said Strange. “They are preparing their permit submittals now but, again, we haven’t seen anything yet.”

The Southworth factory was sold in 2018  for $1.9 million to PCT Realty Ventures of Adams and BRN Mustang Realty LLC of Texas for manufacturing and industrial use.

After 178 years of being a local papermaker, the longtime Southworth factory sold the property in 2017 after ceasing operations.

The Hood in Agawam, which is considered to be the company’s largest plant, has been serving dairy products to supermarkets, grocery stores, and brand name chains for a little over 60 years.

A spokesperson from Hood did not respond to requests for comment as of press time.
