SPRINGFIELD – There is a change in programming over WAIC 91.9 FM that should be of benefit for the community and students at American International College (AIC).

Beginning July 1, WAIC now carries the signal of the New England Public Radio News Network (WFCR). The station had been a repeater station for WNPR from Hartford, CT.

Until now the only signal for Hampden County for the NEPR news programming was on AM 640.

The programming includes “Morning Edition,” “Here & Now,” “All Things Considered,” “Fresh Air,” “On Point” and The BBC World Service.

Dean of the School of Business, Arts and Sciences Dr. Susanne Swanker said students at the college will benefit from the new arrangement.

She explained to Reminder Publications there would be a course co-developed with NEPR that will be taught at the stations studio on Main Street.

He explained AIC and NEPR will work through the summer and early fall on the course in order to offer it during the 2017 spring semester.

The course and internships at the station would offer educational opportunities for AIC students in news and marketing. She said the course would be offered, most likely, to seniors in the college’s communications program.

She called the partnership and what it could offer students “very exciting.”

According to AIC President Vincent Maniaci, “This exciting collaboration between AIC and NEPR will provide our students with access to New England Public Radio right here in Springfield. They will benefit academically and gain real life experience with a well-respected media organization.”
