SPRINGFIELD – The Board of License Commissioners approved the all-alcohol license for the city’s newest restaurant, Frontera Grill at its Jan. 11 meeting.

The Mexican family eatery will be located at 1411 Boston Road at the former Ruby Tuesday location, Benjamin Coyle, the restaurant’s attorney told the commissioners.

This is the second location for the restaurant, which has one in Chicopee.

Coyle said the family has spent $50,000 renovating the former chain restaurant.

When open it will employ 37-50 people, Coyle said and will be open from 11 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. He added there might be an application for an extension of hours in the future.

There was no opposition to the license.

The opening of the restaurant is contingent on the approval of the liquor license by the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission in Boston. Coyle said one the license is approved the restaurant is open. The owners are hoping to be able to open their doors in February.

The owners of the Paramount Theater have surrendered the liquor license for the Stonewall Tavern, the bar they own adjacent to the theater block and built into the railroad overpass on Main Street. Board Chair Peter Sygnator explained the reason for the surrender was the announced renovation of the Paramount and desire of the owners, The New England Farmworkers Council, to concentrate on that project rather than running the bar.

Sygnator said the owners plan to re-apply for the license and re-open the tavern in 2019.

The Board decided to penalize Le Souk Hookah Lounge on Worthington Street with a one-day suspension held in abeyance for a year for two violations. The hookah lounge, which has a liquor license, stayed open an hour past its specified closing time on two occasions in November.

Attorney Elizabeth Rodriguez-Ross told the board the owner has invested $75,000 in the business and employs 10 people. The hookah lounge is attracting “young professionals” to downtown, she added.

Sygnator told the manager of record Khadija Hussain, “You clearly don’t know what you’re doing.”

Commissioner Robert Senez urged to give Hussain “the benefit of doubt,” but admonished her by saying, “Don’t come back. [with another violation]. If you do, we’re going to come down on you big time.”
