Public hearing set to address proposed bulk rates increase

SPRINGFIELD - City Councilor Kateri Walsh, the chair of the Maintenance and Development Committee, wants to the public to have the opportunity to weigh in about a proposed increase on the fee associated with the disposal of bulk items.

The committee will conduct a hear starting at 6 p.m. on Aug. 17 at Faith United Church, 52 Sumner Ave.

Walsh explained to Reminder Publications the Department of Public Works (DPW) had requested a $2 increase in fees and Walsh and her colleagues wanted the public to comment on the proposal before the council moves it to a vote.

Walsh said the fee had not been increased for “ a while” and the DPW web page confirmed the fee was confirmed at $8 on Sept. 1, 2006. She added she believes the council would not take any action until a meeting in September.

Since that time, residents of the city, as well as properties that pay a trash fee, have been able to disposed a variety of items for the cost of an $8 sticker and a call to the 311 Call Center (736-3111) to arrange a pick-up. The city will dispose of the following: refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, chairs, tables, cribs, couches, bed frames, sofas, fans, filing cabinets, TVs, plumbing fixtures, doors, windows, bicycles, barbecue grills, mattress, box spring, large toys, tires, lawn mowers, snow blowers, stoves, washers, dryers and rugs.

Walsh said the increase is going to pay for increased costs the DPW sees in tipping fees.

She has received a number of calls, many from seniors, who question whether or not the increase in the fee would result in illegal dumping. Walsh noted there are some problem areas in the city where illegal dumping does take place.

Walsh is hoping for a good turnout for the hearing. “We really like to get a sense of [the public’s opinion],” she said.
