SPRINGFIELD – It was a night of honoring Central High School accomplishments at the School Committee meeting on April 12.

The committee recognized the following Central teams and programs:

• The Girls basketball team for being the 2019 Division 1 Western Massachusetts champions and Massachusetts state finalists. Erik Maurer has coached the team for past seven years, which has resulted in five Western Massachusetts title and one state championship.

• The Central wrestling team for being the 2019 Division I Western Massachusetts and state champions, which Central Principal Thaddeus Tokarz noted that everyone on the team qualified for the state tournament.

• The Central bowling team won the Massachusetts Division II High School Bowling State Championship. Coach Olive Kauila-Fields Briere Mutti told the school committee the high school league was formed in 2014 and the Central team has 21 students in varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams.

• The Central Air Force JROTC program was honored because it recently took part on the Air Force national Open drill Competition in Dayton, OH and all three of the drills teams from the high school placed.

Zachery Ortiz won the third place in the armed Infantry Drill Regulation, while Tuan Bui and Francisco Pantoja won second place in the armed duel exhibition. Kiana Ortiz and Julymar Sepulveda won second place in the unarmed exhibition. The Brandi Flames win the fifth place in the armed regulation category. Pantoja finished first in the solo armed exhibition category while the Lady Eagles finished first in the unarmed exhibition.

Tokarz thanked the school committee for its financial support of the JROTC program, as the cost of sending the group to a national competition is expensive.

Each of the teams received personal congratulations for the members of the school committee and Mayor Domenic Sarno said, “They are champions and scholars as you’ve seen tonight.”
