SPRINGFIELD – Wanted: 750 people who love Dr. Seuss and the Springfield Museums.

That’s the number the Commonwealth needs for the newly proposed Dr. Seuss license plate to become a reality.

Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito and Springfield Museums President Kay Simpson made the announcement at the Wood Museum of Springfield History on March 14. Appropriately enough, the press conference was conducted in the part of the museum where the Springfield Rolls-Royces are displayed, with one care sporting a facsimile of the license plate.

The plate features the Cat in the Hat and the web address for the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum.

Simpson explained that the profit from the sale would benefit the Springfield Museum Foundation.

Flanked by area legislators, Polito said the collaboration between the Registry of Motor Vehicles and the Springfield Museums is an example of the collaboration that “is setting the Commonwealth apart.”

The plates cost an additional $40 with a one-time fee of $20.

“This plate is an opportunity to celebrate all that makes learning fun. Plus Dr. Seuss was all about nurturing curiosity, which is the foundation of any good museum. He once wrote: ‘Think and wonder. Wonder and think.’ That is the recipe for expanding your mind available at the Springfield Museums,” Simpson said.

Paul Picknelly, president of  Monarch Enterprises, announced he would be sponsoring an event later this year to encourage participation in the license plate program.

He predicted there would be “well in excess of 750 applications.”

To apply for the Seuss license plates, go to https://springfieldmuseums.org/seuss-plate/ and follow instructions to apply.

Polito took the opportunity of being in Springfield to administer the oath of office to Vanessa Otero, chief operating officer for Partners for Community, as a new member of the Board of Directors at the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
