LONGMEADOW– A search is underway to find a new assistant principal at Glenbrook Middle School after Elizabeth Nelson left the position to become principal of Wolf Swamp Road Elementary School.

Glenbrook Principal Nikcole Allen told Reminder Publications interviews took place all day on June 30.

A second round of interviews is set to take place and a new assistant principal would likely be chosen by July 15.

“We will interview four to five candidates that were chosen by the [hiring] committee members and we have eight members on the hiring committee,” she noted. “The committee will choose our top two candidates at the end of interviews and then hopefully a final decision will be made soon after that.”

She added the second round of interviews would be conducted during the week of July 15 after reference checks are completed.

Allen said some important qualities the district is looking for in the next assistant principal include organization skills, being a student-focused, positive, experienced individual, someone who is knowledgeable in special education and regular education, consistent, “a leader” and who is compassionate.

“It’s a dual role,” she explained. “You’d like to see them have some kind of background in special [education] because a portion of their position is supervisor of special [education].”

She said the job requires someone who is fair, but strict when discipline is required. Some candidates have applied from other states in New England, she noted.

Allen also congratulated Nelson on becoming Wolf Swamp’s new principal.

“It’s well deserved,” Allen said. “She was very knowledgeable [and] educated. She’s well rounded and we have already been talking about vertical collaboration that we can do because she’s principal at Wolf Swamp and she will be feeding all of those kids into Glenbrook.”
