LONGMEADOW – Greenwood Park is going to be gaining a “Little Free Library” as the Our Village free playgroup mothers have decided to give back to the park that they’ve been enjoying with their children.

Growing up outside of Boston, Meaghan Perry constantly saw “leave a book, take a book” libraries scattered around the city.  Now a Longmeadow resident, Perry’s decided that the community could use this type of activity.

“My vision for this library is that it will be used by all members in our community.  It will be in a central location so all will have easy access to it, it could even be used as a restful area where you could browse the books while sitting on a blanket,” Perry said.

Perry hopes that the “Little Free Library” will encourage reading among the younger generation, and the older.

“I’m most excited to share this project with children as it will get them excited for reading as they venture to the little library and see what new books are there.  It will also be a useful tool for helping them learn to share.  When they leave a book, they will be sharing a story with a friend,” Perry said.

While funding for books and the Greenwood Park location has been approved, Perry is looking for assistance when it comes to the physical structure of the library stand.

“We’re looking for either an old recycled newspaper stand, or some kind of outdoor cabinet.  Other libraries are wooden structures that resemble birdhouses or old school houses,” Perry noted. “The possibilities are endless so long as it is sturdy and can keep the books dry.”

Perry will be collecting any books the community has to contribute to the Free Little Library and also welcomes ideas for structures.  To contact Perry, email her at meaghanperry@fit4mom.com.

“Having a background in education, I absolutely love the idea of having these leave a book, take a book libraries to encourage reading and to build a community around sharing books,” Perry said.
