LONGMEADOW – The Community Preservation Committee (CPC) is looking for applicants to apply for $120,575 in Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds.

The funding was approved by voters at the Oct. 25 Special Town Meeting. Three sums of $40,192 can be approriated to separate project categories – open space, housing, and historic preservation.

CPC Chair Steve Weiss told Reminder Publications the committee has yet to receive many submissions at this time. The deadline for submitting a project to the CPC is Dec. 5.

“That’s something that I obviously want people to know about to make sure that they know the deadline is coming up,” he noted. “Most of the applications come in Dec. 1 through Dec. 5 – that’s just human nature. I don’t know what projects or applications we’re going to get this year.”

Weiss said a recent past project that utilized CPA money for funding includes renovations to the Blinn Tennis Court.

“Those tennis courts are fantastic and they’re well used and everyone seems to love them,” he added. “Also, if you were to go over to Storrs Library. They just redid the handicap access ramp there and the sidewalk at the library. All of that was done with CPA money … We’ve funded a series of projects to improve the Storrs House – everything from making it water tight in some places to putting some climate control down in the basement where there’s all sorts of historic records and artifacts. I was actually down in the Storrs House a couple of weeks ago and what they’ve done down there is really impressive.”

He continued, “And there’s all the ongoing projects that have been done in the cemetery over the past few years.”

Asked if he anticipates any specific projects being submitted, he replied, “I don’t know. The [Longmeadow] Historic Society, which monitors the Storrs House they do some application almost every year. I don’t know if they will this year, but I’ll guess that they would. The cemetery association has put in applications on a regular basis.”
