LONGMEADOW – According to Town Manager Stephen Crane’s statement at the June 3 Select Board meeting, the Department of Public Works (DPW) building project is underway. This has not come without worry however, as residents have reached out to Reminder Publishing expressing their concerns for the timeline of the project.

At the June 3 meeting during the Town Managers report, Crane stated that the tree work at the DPW site is largely done. He noted that he “didn’t hear much about it as it was being done,” which we should “take as a good sign.”

Crane continued to explain that large drainage structures have been installed, and said that the actual work of starting to construct the building is underway, “which is good,” he said.

Bearing this in mind, there was an executive session listed on the June 17 Select Board regular meeting agenda which listed discussions would include, but would not be limited to the DPW and the outcome of ballot question two of the Town Election.

In other updates at the June 3 meeting, Crane shared that there was a flood in one of the second floor science labs at Longmeadow High School. At the time, they were trying to figure out what happened. Crane shared that this was a part of the new wing of the school. The fittings of the building were looked at and it was not human error, instead, there was a failure. He noted that the flood did ruin cabinetry, the cleanup had been completed, and they were working on the repairs.

In regard to the Tina Lane landfill capping, Crane explained that there was an initial kickoff meeting with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and that they’re working on going out to bid for July 1 when the appropriation of funds from Town Meeting will be available. This is a two-phase process, Crane explained, first with soil. Phase two is a vegetative barrier on the area.
