LONGMEADOW – The Storrs Library has welcomed a new director, though she isn’t new to the library itself.  Longtime Longmeadow resident Jean Maziarz was previously the Storrs Library youth services director, and has now been promoted to director as previous Director Karen Kappenman retired.

“When she decided to retire I knew I wanted to follow in her footsteps.  She was an encouraging, supportive and kind mentor, and I would like to keep her good work moving forward,” Maziarz said.

Maziarz is the director moving forward, however she will also be acting as the youth services director until she hires someone new to fill her old position.

“I will absolutely miss my day-to-day interactions with the children and parents.  I have led storytime for children ages three to five years for 14 years and plan to continue doing so,” Maziarz added. “Maintaining my storytime and sewing programs will help me preserve involvement with families, hear what the current issues are, and remain with the roots of my library career.”

Stepping into the new position, Maziarz is looking forward to keeping the library up-to-date on technology while maintaining tradition.

“The library is a community gathering place to explore, collaborate and create.  I hope to continue to build on this foundation, as we are the hub of blending physical and digital learning,” Maziarz said.

Over the coming months Maziarz is focused on working with the Board of Trustees and the Town of Longmeadow on building improvements as well as going head-to-head with budget challenges.

“We have a dedicated, talented and hardworking staff, who have brought our quality of programming and services to very high levels.  I enjoy my job for so many reasons, I work with talented and dedicated people, I feel valued by our community, I’m able to pursue many areas of interest, and I get to ride a bike while I work,” Maziarz said excitedly. “Have you seen our book bike?  It’s fabulous!”

In her spare time, Maziarz enjoys reading, skiing, bike riding and spending time with her family and friends.
