LONGMEADOW – The Longmeadow CLOSE Community needs your help, and you could win a $25 gift certificate to one of many local restaurants and businesses for doing so.

The Longmeadow CLOSE Community is a coalition, which brings together the community to focus on education, prevention and providing resources and support for treatment of substance use disorders. The CLOSE Community is seeking Longmeadow residents’ assistance in completing a survey to assess and collect information that hopes to make the community a part of the solution to ending substance abuse.

“The survey was created to capture the specific risk and protective factors that Longmeadow residents perceive regarding youth alcohol, marijuana, vaping and other substance use in town, including youth and parent behaviors, consequences, root causes, local conditions and community needs,” CLOSE Program Coordinator Paul McNeil explained to Reminder Publishing.

The survey, McNeil stated, will help CLOSE in being a local resource to promote positive consequences and behaviors, protective factors and local conditions that build protection and assets that can be used to change negative local conditions.

“The main purpose of the assessment is to collect and analyze valuable information on the nature and scope of local underage access and use of Alcohol, Tobacco, Vaping products and other Drug (ATOD) issues and related behaviors in the community,” he said. “The comprehensive assessment provides vital support and guidance in prioritizing and defining the community’s needs, developing a strategic plan and implementing multiple intervention strategies.”

McNeil continued, sharing that the primary purpose of the survey is to determine trends in regard to youth substance use and abuse within the community. By asking questions that include indicators regarding the prevalence of use, populations most affected, types of substances being used, age of onset, environmental factors and attitudes from the community to bring about change, the CLOSE Community will be able to help better the towns environment. The survey is for Longmeadow adults over the age of 18.

“This survey isn’t just for parents in town. We want the perceptions and opinions of all adult residents in the community who have a say in the kind of environment we all want to live in,” he said.

The CLOSE Community’s survey will close on December 31, and drawing for the 10, $25 gift certificates will be held after the New Year. Gift certificates that are up for grabs include Max Burger, Ume Asian Bistro, Delaney’s Market, The Kitchen, Grapevine Pizzeria and Restaurant, Li’s Brothers, Luigi’s, Iron Chef Asian Cuisine, Starbuck’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, Great Harvest and Alex’s Bagel Shop.
