NORTHAMPTON – On June 7 at 5:23 p.m. Northampton firefighters responded to a fire at East Heaven hot tub spa on 33 West St. while returning from another call.

In a press release through the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services on June 8, Northampton Fire Chief Jon Davine and State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostoskey announced it had been determined the fire was accidental.

“The fire at East Heaven, a hot tub and spa company, was spotted at 5:23 p.m. by firefighters returning from another call. Damage is estimated at $500,000. There were no injuries,” the release said.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the fire officials said  the fire started in a closet with mechanical equipment for the hot tubs.

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services indicated there was “no evidence of foul play.”

Northampton Assistant Fire Chief Andy Pelis told Reminder Publishing while the department is assisting the investigation, it is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Fire Services.

Pelis said the fire caused both structural damage as well as damage to the merchandise.

“That is an estimate that could change once the insurance adjusters go in there. I know there was water damage, fire damage to the structure that was on the roof. All the hot tubs on the exterior of the building were destroyed,” he said.

East Heaven did not return a request for comment but updated their website saying they are undergoing emergency renovations.

“We are temporarily closed for emergency renovations. We sincerely appreciate your patience and hope to see you very soon,” it said.
