SPRINGFIELD – With the groundbreaking of a nearly $8 million Health Sciences building, American International College (AIC) officials predicted having the capacity to keep up with employment needs in the health industry, as well as having a facility that will adjust to changes in the field.

Congressman Richard Neal joined AIC President Vincent Maniaci and Mayor Domenic Sarno on Oct. 18 in formally announcing the construction of the new building located on State Street across from the main campus. The two-story structure will have more than 20,000 square feet and will house labs, rehabilitation and human performance spaces, classrooms and faculty offices.

The building will be the home for exercise science programs as well as occupational therapy and physical therapy classes.

Maniaci added the new building complements the revitalization along the State Street corridor.

Dr. Karen Russo, director and associate professor of Nursing, said the building would allow the college to expand its healthcare programs.

“The healthcare landscape is consistently changing and we must keep up with these changes,” she said.

Neal noted the importance of having a trained workforce to fill the thousands of jobs in Massachusetts that are vacant. He pointed out the large economic impact the healthcare industry makes on Western Massachusetts.

The building is expected to be completed in the fall of 2018.
