SPRINGFIELD – A Woburn-based company gave the city of Springfield a Christmas present on Dec. 23: about a quarter of a million dollars-worth of PPE supplies.

John Chen, the global president and CEO of Mascon Inc., which owns Mascon Medical, made the presentation to the city at the Department of Public Works headquarters, which is the city department in charge of storing protective gear.

Springfield received 266,340 masks, gowns, face shields, goggles hand sanitizing wipes and electrostatic sprayers. Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton Harris called it “an amazing donation.”

The donation was part of a more than $1 million in protective equipment the company made to Revere, Chelsea, Lawrence, Leominster, Fitchburg, Brockton, as well as Springfield.

In a written statement, Chen said, “From the onset of this pandemic, our team has been committed to helping address the issues surrounding Covid-19 PPE supplies. As we approach the holiday season, we hope this donation will provide critical support to those hit hardest, especially hospitals, schools and area non-profits including shelters and food pantries.”

Mayor Domenic Sarno said, “I am deeply grateful to Global President and CEO Mr. John Chen and Mascon Medical for thinking of us here in Springfield and making such a generous donation. Not only will be able to continue protecting our first responders and frontline personnel, but with this donation we will be able to provide some PPE items to our local health systems at Baystate and Mercy as well. This donation was also a nice reminder that the spirit of giving is alive and well.”
