SPRINGFIELD – Freedom Credit Union branches across Western Massachusetts are currently accepting donations to support Walk MS 2021 and the National MS Society. All funds will go towards helping those living with multiple sclerosis (MS) have access to the resources and support they need.

Cash donations will be accepted in-person at any of the 11 Freedom Credit Union branches until May 29. Online donations can also be made on the National Multiple Sclerosis Society website at https://www.nationalmssociety.org/.

Walk MS 2021 was hosted virtually on May 15, though interested participants are still encouraged to walk and donate. “Because it’s virtual you have that flexibility. You can still register for the event, if you will, and make a donation right then,” said Jamie Convery, branch officer at Freedom Credit Union Sixteen Acres. “It’s kind of ongoing.”

According to Convery, Freedom Credit Union has supported the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for many years and will continue to do so.

“They do so much with research, treating Multiple Sclerosis, giving resources and support to families who have a loved one who is dealing with MS or, if they themselves are dealing with it, letting them know they’re not alone,” she said. “A few of our employees have been personally affected by MS and it does impact so many people that it is something that is special to us. We want to make sure that we continue to support them.”

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that affects the central nervous system by disrupting communication signals within the brain and between the body and the brain. Many patients experience symptoms such as numbness, tingling, mood changes, memory problems, pain, fatigue, blindness, paralysis and more.

Convery said she has been personally affected by Multiple Sclerosis. “I personally have someone in my family who was diagnosed with MS and living with it can be difficult. It’s nice to be able to donate to try to find a cure or to help them live well with multiple sclerosis because it can be achieved. It may be hard and it is a devastating disease, but there are ways to try to live with the symptoms and get that emotional, physical and mental support,” she said.
