SPRINGFIELD – State Sen. Eric Lesser was “totally blown away” by the reception of his first “Thrive After 55 Wellness Fair” event at Western New England University on June 9.

More than 600 people ages 55 and over attended the program which featured speakers on a variety of topics vital to that age group, 49 vendors offering products and services, a raffle and a free lunch.

Prior to the event, Lesser said, “Our Thrive After 55 Senior Fair will be a fun, informative way to get connected with the wonderful local businesses, non-profits and government services available to our region's seniors. From health and wellness to transportation, from insurance to veterans programs, this fair will be an unparalleled resource for our community – and a great time, as well! A special thank you also to Western New England University, Health New England, 22News, The Republican and PRIME Magazine for their partnership.”

Lesser told Reminder Publications participants were “were lined around the building an hour before we opened.”

He said he understands there are pressures and anxieties that come from increasing costs for health care and family situations at this age.  Lesser said his intent for the Wellness Fair was to be a facilitator between seniors and services that could help them here in Western Massachusetts.

Those who attended the event proved to be “hungry for information and services,” he added.

He also noted that Millennials such as himself would be facing problems in their future such as rising health costs. “These are issues everyone cares about, not just seniors,” Lesser explained.
