Mathis leaving MGM Springfield for new position

SPRINGFIELD – MGM Resorts International announced on Jan. 21 that MGM Springfield President and COO Michael Mathis will be assuming a new role in the company and will be succeeded by Chris Kelley,who has served in the same capacity at MGM Northfield Park in Ohio since April 2019.

Mathis will be senior vice president of Business Development and reporting to MGM Resorts’ President & COO Bill Hornbuckle’s office.

Kelley’s new role still has to pass regulatory approval.

In a written statement, Jorge Perez, Regional Portfolio president, MGM Resorts International, said “We are excited to have Chris lead the MGM Springfield team. Chris’ experience in Ohio, rebranding and integrating a property and introducing MGM to the community, will be an asset for Springfield as we continue to work closely with the community and strive to not only be a world-class entertainment destination but also a good corporate neighbor. I also want to recognize Mike for his years of service and all the tremendous work he accomplished in leading MGM Springfield from conception to opening. His leadership was instrumental in the successful opening of the property and the great relationships we have built with the Springfield community and our partners in New England.  I know Mike will continue to serve the company well in his new role and we wish him all the best.”

According to a press release, Kelley joined MGM Resorts as vice president and chief financial officer of MGM Grand Detroit in 2017. Prior to joining the Company, He had an 18-year tenure with Viejas Casino & Resort in?San Diego where he held numerous leadership positions, including five years as the property’s general manager. Kelley holds bachelor’s degrees in Economics and Political Science from Connecticut College and received a master’s degree in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Mayor Domenic Sarno said, “I have been priorly informed by MGM Resorts President and COO Bill Hornbuckle that Mike Mathis is assuming a new role with MGM Resorts and that Mr. Chris Kelley will now become president and COO of MGM Springfield.  I enjoyed a fine working relationship with Mike Mathis and thank him for his commitment to Springfield.  He did a great job in ensuring participation of our Springfield community.  I wish he and his family well. My administration now looks forward to working with new president and COO of MGM Springfield Chris Kelley to taking our MGM Springfield to the next level.”
