SPRINGFIELD – The newly opened MGM Springfield will be the site for the 23rd City of Bright Nights Ball, what was described by Spirit of Springfield President Judith Matt as a “historic” move.

The gala, which helps support the Spirit of Springfield and its signature Bright Nights event, has traditionally been conducted at the Springfield Sheraton, as Paul Picknelly, president of Monarch Enterprises explained.

He joked he had challenged MGM Springfield President Michael Mathis is an arm wrestling match and then threw it in MGM’s favor.

Mathis said he was very excited to be hosting the Nov. 10 events.

The gala will be the second large, high profile event for the casino, which Mathis said is on track to open in the fall. The first event will be the opening of the casino itself. He added.

Mathis said the goal would be to raise at least $50,000 for the Spirit of Springfield. He lauded Matt by saying, “You need people like Judy who care about this community

Anthony Caratozzolo, MGM Springfield vice president of food and beverage, said the 10,600 square foot grand ballroom at the casino would hold at least 450 people for such an event.
