SPRINGFIELD – The Springfield Business Improvement District (BID) wants to see the 60 new market-rate apartments at the Overland Loft fill up quickly and is making an offer: sign a lease in December and the BID will pay $200 toward the first months rent.

BID Executive Director Chris Russell explained to Reminder Publishing, he wants to see the new apartment building reach capacity as that would encourage Davenport Advisors LLC, the owners and developers of the building, to move forward on more downtown apartments at a building it bought on Lyman Street.

“They did a wonderful job [at the Overland building],” Russell said, “It’s a very appropriate use.”

The new apartments are in the former Willys-Overland Motor Company building on Chestnut Street. According to the Springfield Preservation Trust, the building “was built in 1916 for the Willys-Overland Motor Company. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983 for its connection to Springfield’s early automotive history. It is an important part of a collection of significant historic buildings near Apremont Triangle that includes the old YMCA building, the Hotel Kimball, the Tarbell-Watters Building, and the McIntosh Building (which won an award for its restoration after damage from a gas explosion).”

This building was also damaged in the gas explosion in 2012.

The new apartments are scheduled to open in January 2021 and are described as “ranging from lofts to two bedrooms with state-of-the-art features such as granite kitchens, stainless steel appliances and washers and dryers in every unit. Building amenities will include fitness center, storage units and a lobby with work/study spaces, secured package locker, an entertainment and lounge area, which will be available for private events, and a common area with comfortable seating for casual gatherings and guests.”

There is an option for renting an indoor parking space and there is a secured parking lot adjacent to the building. A dog park is currently being constructed.
