Springfield women's march announced

March 16, 2017

About 20 people gathered at Court Square on March 8 International Women’s Day and to announce a march for women’s rights on March 25. Organizer Yolanda Cancel explained there would be three points from which the march will start: State and Walnut streets, Central and Main streets and Congress and Main streets.

The three groups of marchers will converge on the steps of City Hall and there will be a rally with speakers and music.

Cancel said she is not asking the city to close any streets for the marchers, but rather she wants motorists and others to see the marchers.

Cancel wrote on Facebook, “March is women’s month where we celebrate. It's been going on for well over 100 years. This Years theme is ‘Process to Progress.’ [The march is for] Any girl, young woman or woman who has faced a hardship of any sort and is here standing with us stronger than ever. It could be depression, domestic violence, weight management, child abuse, substance abuse, being unappreciated by your husband and/or children in the home, inequality, name shaming, anything that you have went through and you stand in solidarity with women all over the world! The woman Race! "Process to Progress" we fight this fight for future female generations!”

At the rally on March 8, Brenda Lopez (center) was among the speakers.
