WARREN – For the first time, the town of Warren will be participating in National Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 17.

Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization was founded by Morrill Worcester in 2007. Its overall mission is “Remember, Honor, Teach.”

Every year on the designated December day, veteran’s wreath-laying ceremonies take place at Arlington National Cemetery along with more than 3,400 additional locations across the United States.

In Warren, a ceremony is set to begin at 12 p.m. Veterans Council Chair Rebecca Acerra said an Air Force veteran will speak followed by a placement of wreaths at St. Paul’s Cemetery and Pine Grove Cemetery on Maple Street. The event is open to the public.

As newly approved location coordinators, Acerra said their goal is to place 560 wreaths. Each wreath costs $15 to sponsor. For anyone who purchases two for $30, Acerra said they will be given a third one free.

At the time of the interview, she noted that all 560 wreaths had been secured. “[The wreaths] will cover every grave in the two cemeteries,” she said.

She went on to say, “We’ve been very pleased with the support that we’re getting from local businesses and residents.”

Whether people are looking to place the wreaths on specific graves or randomly, she said, “It’s nice to see people appreciate and acknowledge the veterans.”

Acerra noted that the local boy scout troop will be in attendance. In line with the Wreaths Across America mission, she said, “It’s important for the next generation to learn about and honor veterans.”

“The co-chair [Richard Demetrius] and I thank everyone who has provided support throughout the year with the Purple Heart breakfast and Memorial Day.”

She acknowledged Warren and West Warren for being so appreciative of the Veterans Councils efforts.
