I too have had the Newenglander turkey sandwich.  Not only delicious but huge.  I had a second day with it!  Not much seating there but definitely a take out kinda place.  Great sandwiches!

This post by Reminder Publishing is a terrific tribute to Basil's of Stafford Springs, CT.  Great meals, great service, great owner and great staff. I've eaten in and had enough for a second meal at home. I've had take out with the same results. I recommend Basil's every chance I get .

Also included on this day from the Springfield Armory, The local portable radio enthusiast group known as POTA*413 (Parks On The Air) serving Western MA is hosting an amateur radio "Live On The Air" operation for public display on the historic rich grounds at the Armory during the reenactment event times for Armory Day. This is in association with the 2016 National Parks On The Air 100th year celebration being overseen and hosted by the ARRL (American Radio Relay League), based in Newington, CT... POTA*413 welcomes the public to stop by our operations table and view our group making "On-Air" contacts with other National Parks in the USA, and amateur radio stations from all over the World to help honor the Springfield Armory. Our efforts also display being able to set up a portable emergency communictions station, which can run in a time of need to pass emergency traffic and logistics needs into an incident area.

Before you get too excited about "showcasing" downtown, how about first fixing the lack of downtown parking problem so that our customers can park for five minutes to pick up or drop off papers at the remaining State Street and Main Street businesses without getting a parking ticket.  If our customers will no longer visit our State Street and Main Street offices due to these $25 parking fines, we will be forced to leave downtown.  We have 5 or 6 open parking spaces in front of 101 State Street, but there are no parking meters so our customers pay a $25 fine to park for a few minutes minutes.  Showcase that.

I appreciate what the BID and other groups are trying to do for the City of Springfield and Downtown specifically. I think that it takes time to turn the ship but that time has passed and we are on a new course. Can't wait to check out White Lion Wednesdays, the City Block Summer Concert Series, Cruise Night, and the multiple Farmers Markets in the city this summer. As far as parking in the city is concerned it's a city and parking in them is always an issue no matter where you are. I usually find that if I can't locate a parking spot on the street then I can often find a space in a nearby parking lot or garage.

Batman -vs- Superman, or how to destroy two American cultural icons in two hours and thirty one minutes.

Batman -vs- Superman - Dawn of Justice is a completely disjointed jumbled mess of epic proportions. Some scenes are enjoyable, but they never really connect. The story has no linear narrative and is basically illogical. As a big fan of both Superman and Batman, this film was a huge personal let-down for me. Batman is the Dark Knight, and this movie is so dark that it's barely visible.

There is absolutely no optimism here. It begins 18 months after the Man of Steel has saved the planet from General Zod. I would have liked to have seen what happened during that time. In the comics, Superman would have been involved in the healing process, by helping to rebuild Metropolis and comforting families of the victims. The Kryptonian spacecraft would not have been left behind as a painful reminder of what happened that day. Superman would have already spirited it away to the Fortress of Solitude for further study.

Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) is downright painful to watch. There is no real back story to explain his genius, or insanity. I'm still waiting for Braniac to appear in a Superman film. Why is it always Lex Luthor?

If one love's mindless video games, monster truck rallies and the WWF; they should love Batman -vs- Superman. Everyone else will be sorely disappointed. Too much CGI and not enough story. The WB Batman and Superman animated series were far more superior and entertaining than this conflagration of nonsense.

Warner Brothers also dropped the ball long ago by saying Wonder Woman would be making her introduction. It would have been a hell of a lot more interesting if it were a surprise. The battle with Doomsday goes on and on, and the ending is a complete bummer. If Warner is setting us up for a Justice League of America film, we are in big trouble.

Wish I could say something positive about Batman -vs- Superman. But I can't.

Not only "was" there a real Cal-Neva straddling the stateline, there still IS the Cal-Neva. Spent a bit of time there years ago, and watched it's decline...Last visit before it closed for remodeling, it really WAS the sort of ghost town depicted in El Royale... a little eerie.... Larry Ellison has bought it and the orginal casino, showroom, Indian room, circle bar are to be demolished and replaced. The famous bi-state swimming pool where Marilyn Monroe lounged the last weekend of her life has already been demolished. The hotel tower will stay, everything else will be replaced. That said, it does indeed still exist and is being transformed into a World class resort once more, history be damned.

Thank you, Mr. Dobbs, for your enthusiastic and perceptive review.  Many people worked for a long time to make this new release a real tribute to Stan and Ollie.  I, too, have been an enthusiastic Laurel and Hardy fan since childhood -- I discovered them at age five in 1964 and by 1971 was a member of the Way Out West tent of the Sons of the Desert, based in the Los Angeles area.  Many of the members at that time were people who had worked with Laurel and Hardy for years at the Hal Roach Studios, and I began doing interviews with them, ultimately meeting and interviewing about 65 of the team's associates.  For the new video release, I am very happy to have shared excerpts of my audio interviews and three filmed interviews (made with a Super 8 sound camera, and not too professional, but that's all I had in 1981).  Again, thank you for your review and I hope your readers will purchase the new set on Blu-ray or DVD.  The timeless comedy of Laurel and Hardy will certainly make these stressful times much easier to bear.

What I wondered about was the chaos you mentioned.  I don't know if I missed something in the article or not.  I know you said it took about 7 years to get to the end and for the guy you were talking to be senteneced.  But I don't know what it is that happened or what he did.  I'm just curious I guess.

Kathy is an amazing woman I have been honored to meet.  One person can make a difference, changing the law and her endless support of those who lean on her. She has inspired many to take up the fight to protect our children from sexual abuse predators.

Predators love that we dont call attention to their behavior!!!  Call or write Govenor Baker telling him to sign in the law for sexual abuse prevention training. Safe Touch, Safe Secrets needs to be taught along with fire drills and bus evacuation. It is not strangers molesting children, it is people they know.

This lady was my kids' attorney. She ignored my history of restraining orders and the fact that 2 kids accused my ex, former Springfield city councillor John Lysak, of sexual assault. One of those accusations resulted in my ex admitting guilt in a court of law. Even with the guilty plea, she refused to stop advocating for my ex to keep custody of my kids. I have no legal custody of my kids, even though I've never neglected or abused them, and I have no criminal record. My ex has had restraining orders against him and pled guilty to sexually assaulting a child under the age of 14. This is unprofessional, and makes her unfit for Congress.

As a colleague, I have been impressed by Attorney Anatul-Wadud’s commitment and professionalism since the day I met her. Her work in a particular case on behalf of an individual does not represent her political stances or qualifications - only advocacy of her client’s wishes and goals in that case. Sounds like she did her job. And if elected, there is no doubt in my mind that she would do an excellent  job advocating for the people of the First District.

The story about the little boy and the gazebo, are true. The crazy woman story is true. The 8 teens who hung themselves together, in what was called "a satanist suicide cult", is true... Ive even heard of a phantom tailgater who speeds up on your ass, at night, then disappears all of a sudden. Rock-of-Dundee Rd is my stomping ground, having been raised in Wilbraham. Hamden kids and us Wilbraham kids went to the same schools, and i grew up at multipule friend's houses who lived on R.o.D rd.  I was saddened to read about this woman's lack of health coverage in this country. Yet in Italy she had no concerns as, like many countries throughout the world, it has the universal healthcare .

 I Empathize with her concern because for 30 years I didn't have health insurance. Luckily for me I am currently on mass health which takes very good care of me and for which I am most grateful. 

 I am impressed with how the average Italian handles money matters. Good for them for saving!  Two, it seems like they have more important values than just money. I'm impressed with that.

Do you deal with the loud, drunk, drug-fueled individuals who harass the people in the nearby shops and walking past the hotel on the public sidewalks? Do you notice the police cars showing up there pretty much all the time? Guess what? We do. The place is trouble, and has been for years. Perhaps you and your owner client should spend a week living in that place, then come and tell the people who own homes, work, and pay their taxes weather or not the place is trouble.

Agawam is in desperate of an over 55 ranch style condo's - prerably single unit ones.   Our generation is now older and we moved to Agawam 40 years ago and have helped Agawam to flourish and now that we need help and to downsize, we have been told there are no plans to get an over 55 into the works.

 

I cannot tell you how many of us have been waiting for Agawam to do something and all we hear is that the land is too expensive and so why is that if we are supposed to be such a great town.   Why doesn't someone stand up for us the older generation as we have supported this town for 40 years plus.    

 

I am hoping the reminder will help us to get the word out to get the ball rolling and quickly.

A Promise to Astrid is just what I needed  today...my father just passed two weeks ago on Jan 3rd 2020 and a very special friend of my family, Clare  passed away December 31st 2019.  They were two special people that did so much for orhers.

It felt so good to watch this movie and see the effect that Astrid, my father and Clare helped in so many lives.

Pay it forward is the message....It inspires me....Astrid was an angel I'm convinced... A Promise to Astride, I will spread the word...??????

2/3 and we went to the agawam dog park this morning, dirt is still frozen so no big mud puddle . We had a great time, grounds look great. so nice having the park open!  We MISSED going when it was closed, hopefully no more snow!!

I think we should offer the choice of remote or in school learning.  Have the parents and teachers sign up for their choice. Not a survey, actual names on an actual form. It's possible that there are enough parents that want to keep their kids home that the schools and busses will have enough space to keep both kids and teachers that want to be in school safe. Additionally it will keep those that have weaker immune systems, either themselves or family members, safe at home. This will also protect the teachers that can't or are afraid to return to the classroom from termination.  For those that think that this is just a virus, clearly you haven't lost anyone to it yet. My heart goes out to those that have.

The plan you propose puts a lot of parents in a tough decision. I want my son (2nd grade, Phelps) to attend school, but would not be comfortable sending him if social distancing cannot be accomplished. Given a choice between full time or remote, I would be forced to choose remote, but this would probably be detrimental to his education compared to his in school peers.

People should have chickens in their backyards and be allowed to to have so many not a lot but enough to feed their families.I don't think they should have a ton of chicken so they can sell the eggs no but I think they should be allowed to have chickens in their backyard to supply families like I said before I go open your eyes let us have chickens.??

I found the Java Stop several months ago. From the moment I went in there I was greeted in a friendly and welcoming manner. I sampled the coffee and chose the one I liked best.  I always got the same thing and when I went inCraig would acknowledge me and in a jiffy my coffee was ready to go. Then I threw a monkey wrench into the works and have been adding flavors together. I have not been disappointed in the least.

They are very community oriented and get involved in community issues. This is the one place I will be visiting for a long time to come. It is the best in Agawam.

While I generally like the Reminder and appreciate newspaper journalism, this article does a disservice to readers. This is a partisan election yet the introduction to the candidate statements doesn't reference their respective political parties or how they are facing off in the primaries. This miss is even more glaring give the that only one of the candidates mentions party affiliation in their statement.

How can anybody support Kos and his crazy cop buddy? This guy had "ghost detectors" in the police department PLUS MIKE IS RIGHT!

If he assualted a police officer he would be thrown on the ground and broght to jail just like everyone else. He yelled at this crazy cop who showed up there to bully Mike... Why anybody would think Kos is a better mayor is crazy. Kos raised taxes! Kos took away Chicopee Fest Of All, He has done NOTHING! Everything was great under Mayor Mike. EVERYTHING.

I think rich people like Kos (for some strange reason) just because he is a repubican. The only think Kos has is "well Mayor Mike went on Ashley Madinson" WHO CARES!!! To me it just shows Mike is a regular dude and not a robot plus the gy was not even married at the time.... The Kos Suporters of course will say "it was on the clock he did this"  You are just dumb! We are talking about a Mayor of Chicopee here not NYC...How many hours do you really think the mayor of Chicopee works? How much can a mayor actually do every single day?  Mike brought fun to Chicopee. Kos has brought crazy cops who think they can see dead people.....

I agree...Babci's are the best. I have tried many brands of Pieropi, including Millie's, and Babci's flavor, especially the cabbage pierogi are far superior. Babci's are the closest to homemade that you can buy...definitely! My family loves them! We were excited at first to learn that there would soon be a competitor for cable internet service in Chicopee. Sadly the cost is more than what is currently available. I for one hoped that the new service would be less costly so that elderly customers on a fixed income could afford internet service. Faster speeds are great for gamers, but for those that simply want to do thier banking online and share photos etc. this new service leaves a lot of citizens behind. Thanks but no thanks.

I think its great that mayor Sarno is willing to have the kielbasa festival at the eastfield mall and that you for continuing the tradition of the kielbasa festival. But since its beginnings in 1974 till 1997 the kielbasa festival has been a chicopee tradition and I hope that whatever hurdels are preventing the festival from coming back to chicopee, will be resolved so we can continue to host the kielbasa festival in the location it orginated from.

I grew up in Agawam my whole life and my husband grew up his whole life in Chicopee. It wasn't until 2007 that we moved to Florida. My point is that we lived there for the entire 1980's earlier and beyond and had never heard a thing about this story. I'm glad that I watch the movie now and now know about it. 

 

I have to agree with someone who had already commented on the poor acting and the unexpected holes in the story. If someonne had given me $1,700 for a new car and then gave me another $1,800 for the van I wanted with no strings attached I would be moved to tears. Let alone another $1,000 to fix my air conditioning. There would be no way to hold the tears and graditute back. I also thought it strange that he didn't catch on that she was dying the next day and left the hospital room smiling. She was clearly was sick and was not going home the next day. Even when they all arive at her house and was tallking in a circle about how she had saved their lived their live. No tears or barely any emotion shown if you can even call it that. Better acters and directors would have made this movie so much better. I cry during ever movie but no this one. That says a lot about the lack of emotional impact of this story. Such a shame that this could have done this movie so much better.

I found this story a rather disappointing in that it was an extremely inexperience cast, poorly acted with major holes in the storyline, for example when the main character's last attempt to visit Astrid, he shows no sad emotion, which is confusing to the viewer. He walks away from her hospital room smiling - no real closure. The only possible redeeming quality is his feeble attempt to repay Astrid with kind deeds, tit for tat, out of guilt perhaps. Her giving money, which was plentiful for Astrid, is not the most generous act a person can do. I found this premise of payback in work for monetary gifts to be a bit shallow. The "religious" overtones were also shallow and meaningless. The church congregation smiled nonstop for no particular reason. This story was not only feeble, poorly acted, but disgustingly predictable.

The original thought was to consider businesses, and then look to public; but I have an alternate idea:

Let's use City Hall, and the Main Library Branch for starters. They'll get on board quickly. Followed by Schools. Why not start offering the Fiber to the streets nearby those locations to help build out the infrastructure?
This would show that there is a customer base that is buying the service, and justify further expansion.

If you connect the Hall and a couple/few blocks surrounding it, then connect the Main Branch and the couple/few blocks around it; you have the beginnings of the backbone to cover the area. Now consider the 2 schools, and those blocks are getting added in. (And this is only a portion of Front Street!)

Suddenly, you have infrastructure. BUILD IT, AND WE WILL COME!

I fully would support fiber optic internet if it came to my neighborhood. I currently pay $68 for Internet with what I consider adverage speed thru the only show in town cable provider.

I reside directly across the river from CEL and using our neighborhood as a test location would provide a easy test with very little optic cable outlay.

Using CEL crews to run the cable would provide work, extra pay and even new hires.

Its a win for all involved!

Interesting at one point the mayor and council talk about affordable housing and then they immediately look at making building costs more expensive. The green building put in place a few years ago added significantly to the cost of construction. Then I look at the new school and they opt out of geothermal because of cost and some how are allowed to hook up to natural gas during the moratorium. Another ordinance of do as I say not as I do.

This year would break the hearts of my neighbors and their families again if you refuse to have a "rain date" for our beautiful fireworks like you did last year!   We looked on the websites for all of the surrounding towns to find that they clearly posted an alternate time for their displays in the case of bad weather, but were dumbfounded to find that our very expensive fireworks were being fired off during a thunderstorm!  Please manage our donated funds more responsibly this year.

That meeting was tantamount to Communism.  I believe Angela Thorpe took it upon herself to put across her agenda before she left her seat on the board. I believe everything that happened at this meeting should be reversed and both Thorpe and Gorman be removed from the board secondary to collusion and violating open meeting laws.

The town of East Longmeadow has made The Perfect Choice to fill the department's sergeant position.  I have known Officer Sousa for several years and he is an outstanding officer who is very conscientious, responsible, trustworthy, courageous and of the highest integrity! He exemplifies the term Protect and Serve. Congratulations Officer Sousa on your new position and congratulations to the people of the town of East Longmeadow because they are  actually the big winners here.

Sounds like standard U.S. government propaganda.  So his job was to tell civilians to stay inside the house when the bullets were flying?  Why would anyone wander onto a battlefield?  When the "battlefield" was an entire city, like Baghdad or Fallujah?

I would have thought Mr. Starks would have taken out nomination papers and formed a committee if he was a serious candidate...but he did not. The process takes considerable time and effort, and requires a serious commitment. As head of the Republican town committee, he should know this. Now he decides he wants to run a sticker campaign? 

As everyone knows East Longmeadow needed representation MORE THAN EVER with the recent debacle in town government. Did he not think it was important to throw his hat in the ring there and help out his own town?

Just to clarify. The draft document for posting for the permanent Town Manger position from the Collins Institute (our consultant) did not have the residency requirement. I said we need to add it per the Home Rule Charter and also per the Home Rule Charter to advise that it "could" be waived, but the preference is to have a permanent Town Manager that plans to live in East Longmeadow.

Went in for a deli style sandwich, could tell the meat was kept in a heating table in the back, was lukewarm and fat had concealed in between slices, definitely not the fresh slices I was expecting.

The coleslaw is good, but not made daily, vinegar had began breaking down the cabbage, making it slightly sweet, but mushy.

Took forever for them to make a single sandwich with just the meat and mustard, waited about five minutes for it (and no they don't toast their bread so I'm not sure what took so long).

Paid for avacado fries but was told when I received my food that they gave me normal fries because they were out of the avacado ones, had to make a fuss with the manager because they are different prices, then only got refunded the difference in price, not including tax on that. Had to explain to her that tax is greater on more expensive things then on less expensive things. Pickle was the only good part of the meal,

Final score: 1 out of 10, don't waste your money, overpriced and underwhelming

I tried this restuarant the other day and loved it!! The staff was so kind and caring. The food is a little bit more expensive but it is so worth it because the food is fresh and made to order. I will continue to eat at this restuarant. I love it. There food is delicious and healthy

This place is absolutely awful. The service here sucks and the food is way over priced. It will probably go out of business soon. The managers are also compulsive liars and very mean. I would not recommend eating here.

If people would just abide by the law and follow the signs as they are posted, the rotary would move much smoother. It's the motorists that think since they stopped 5 cars back at a stop sign that means they can fly right through the sign when they get up to it. The middle gets backed up because everyone is trying to beat each other through the intersection. It is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. A bunch of adults acting like 2 year olds. Follow the posted signs, slow down, and it would flow just fine.

This is the best news.  There should be no yield sign for people who have already entered the rotary, according to state law. people start up from the stop signs on Maple and Shaker Rd and you take your life in your hands to proceed up Prospct St or to continue up rte 83.  I agree making one lane from Maple into the Rotary is a start.  Thank you Chief Delessio.

The problem is the center island, it should be closed off, and have the traffic flow to the right.  That way the vehicles will each take a road off the rotary.  The problem is mainly going through the island area and not slowing down.

As a resident of East Longmeadow, someone who knows people who work for this town and those who work for AMR. I think this article is indeed a "slap in the face" to those who work for AMR. These paramedics and emergency service personnel, some of whom do in fact live within East Longmeadow have done nothing but allow the people of this town the privilege of saving money for not paying this company to respond to 911 calls within 6 minutes. People's lives have been saved by the people whom do and don't live within this community. The employees that work for AMR deserve to be recognized for the lives they have saved and the work that they do here in this town. The fact that East Longmeadow wants to hire paramedics to service this town full time is wonderful! It should in no way shape or form deprive those employees who work for AMR, for the work they have done!This company deserves to be thanked! Not put down, because they don't live within this town! AMR employees as those whom East Longmeadow will hire I'm sure, come to work everyday not knowing what is going to happen, but with every intention of saving everyone they can! This is the same for all those who work within emergency services! Living in a town has nothing to do with it! This article could have been written much better, to allow those who do a job many people can't honestly imagine then respect they deserve while welcoming a new part of emergency services to East Longmeadow!

What a darling place! Id eaten a muffin there in the early 90's when Id gone there with friends.

 

im pleased to note the current owners had vegetarian dishes, too. I'm vegan and think it's great that they have some options that include vegan and vegetarian choices.  Id like to eat there again in the near future and do hope the current owners find a new owner who will keep the menu.

How can he say he didn't vote to raise his pay?  In January 2017, the house voted 115-44 (with Ashe as a Yes vote) to approve an $18M pay raise package that includes increased wages for all 200 legislators.  Rep Ashe's comp went from $67K in 2016 to $84K so far ytd in 2017.   Is he now saying that what he did is illegal?

And since the bill in question would turn MA into a defacto sanctuary state, he's lying about that as well.

And to label FAIR a hate organization is a joke.  Population stabilization used to be the bread and butter of the Sierra Club and others but now if you disagree with loading the US up with so many people we will look like India or China you are labeled a hate group by the SPLC.

Let's have a fair (pun intended) and honest conversation about the costs and impact of both illegal and legal immigration.

How does becoming a sanctuary state benefit the citizens of our state?  Everyone like higher property taxes to pay for the English as a Second Language teachers in all the schools?  Does everyone appreciate lower wages from mass immigration?

If the only benefit is increased taxes and a larger government to pay for the welfare costs of incoming legal and illegal immigrants then let us have an honest discussion about those topics without resorting to name calling.

At no time did Fenway Golf's Erica and Andrew Fisk attempt to break or circumvent our Governor's guidelines.  Yesterday morning, in a pro bono capacity, I represented the Fisks in a meeting with East Longmeadow's Town Manager, Ms. Mary McNally, to resolve this unfortunate misunderstanding and to assist our Health Department and Fenway Golf as they move forward to respectively enforce and to follow these often-changing and somewhat ambiguous guidelines.  

As a result of this meeting, both parties acknowledged that the Health Department’s communications to the Fisks on 7 May were not labeled, and were not understood or received by Fenway Golf, as warnings - necessating a more formal warning process.  The town also agreed that Fenway Golf believed that it was properly following the rules and operating within the Governor's guidance as it was updated on 18 May.

The Fisks are law-abiding, generous citizens doing all they can to save their small business.  Unfortunately, following (and enforcing) the Governor's guidance is proving quite challenging. 

A joint statement from Fenway Golf and the Town of East Longmeadow will follow.

That procedural hairsplitting of whether a 'no' answer is a formal warning or not does not change the fact that Fenway was told not to do something and then did it anyways, so they're by no means faultless. If it's their business, it's on them to do due diligence about operational requirements or limits and if something is unclear, that means they need to do more asking.

The town may have had the good grace to climb down on the fine, but this may also set a worrisome precedent that could potentially hinder town officials in enforcement of rules and regulations that exist to protect the public.

Lastly, there is no excuse whatsoever for the offensive language or the personal attacks on town officials during this matter. That's not how you make the town look like a good place to live.

The consequence of all this is that I learned a great deal about global warming and gained valuable insights about what we can, and should do to curb some of it's negative impacts. I come from a Pacific Island nation called Papua New Guinea. My country shares borders with Indonesia, Australia and Solomon Islands..I usual search on Youtube any interesting documentaries. Whilst looking up youtube videos I came across a documentary on people who suffer ALS and their real treatment from www.multivitamincare.org. I for had never heard of this crippling and debilitating disease affecting a lot of Americans. It is very torturous to watch and hear patients who suffer. It is more like a combination of various diseases all put into one. Like a person who has suffered a stroke, plus someone suddenly becoming paralysed, cancer etc. but I also get to know understand that there has been successful cure to this disease from multivitamin care. It is too much for a patient to endure such as they slowly begin to pass away if the right medication is not taken .Having a positive mind is a powerful tool .My prayers goes out to ALS patients and their care givers.

the East Longneadow rotary is an accident waiting to happen. If you are from here you may know the rules and lanes and trust that oncoming drivers do as well.

But there are no guarantees . Who knows whether you have right of way or need to yield and you have to judge multiple entrances at the same time.   I would prefer a more structured road/light solution .

The car parade was totally awesome. I appreciate the fact people with the vintage cars took the time to have the parade. It went by my backyard on North Main St so we had a great seat. Thank you again for the  parade during this trying time in America.

I live in a neighborhood where there is a halfway house for people with mental health/addiction issues.  Too, there is a a drug treatment facility and a live in youth addict program.  These programs are far better neighbors  than the criminal element who live in the several apt blocks in the area.

Finally a gun related law change that doesn't further restrict the rights of law abiding citizens.  Some disabled vets still like to hunt but need an ATV to get to their favorite spots.  The locked container requirement was an unnecessary added burden.  Raising the penalty on poachers and joining the interstate compact sounds reasonable also.

The real reason WestMass is saying Iron Duke is in violation of the lease has nothing to do with food or entertainment. The issue is WestMass needs 15 feet of The Iron Duke building in order to build a new road along the back of the mills. Why is this a big deal?  WestMass would receive state/federal funds for the project. Thus, it's about money in the pockets of WestMass. They are commercial slumloards looking to make money at the expense of a thriving small business. Maybe someone should look into the stockhouse next to The Duke. Seems some people are actually living in it and cool food outside as well.

I am a resident of Blandford and have written 10 representatives from DCAMM to our State Rep, and Senetor. I've received only one reaponse from the DCAMM Chief of Staff "The road is currently part of an ongoing discussion between the interested parties at the state and local level. Please feel free to check in with your appropriate town official for more information. Please let me know if you have additional questions." I followed up with a question and have heard nothing. If it's safe to open the Quabbin, then why is Springfield Water and DCAMM refusing to open our road in our town after decades of requests?

I am a resident of Blandford and am thankful that Springfield Waterworks purchased the 14,500 acres in Blandford and Grandville which protected our communities from big developers, however I am pretty sure that when they purchased this land it was also with the understanding that the land would be open for public use such as hiking, picnics, walks, and so for. They, SWW have completely cut the residents of Blandford off from enjoying any part of this area for the past 20 years. The time has come to open it back up. Enough is enough. I will be posting on Facebook all the emails links to all the state reps, senators, and Governor so we can get our voices heard. We may be a small community but we can have a voice if we all try. Dont give up.

This is a small rural town, we don't want your facility built here. Your proposed site will be very visible from the road. Go somewhere else. And not that many people can be on zoom in this small town so I see that as a tactic to sneak in your business.

What we need is more emphasis on getting our kids help with understanding their work and less on tech and internet. Once they get better and better with understanding material they will be able to pick up on tech when the time comes. My only concern was making sure that my kid was adequately prepared throughout so on the advice of one of his teachers I went to the munchmath website and got them to send me a couple of tutors. As parents it's basically up to us to do whatever is necessary to make sure that our kids retain a strong learning position. We get them extra help in sports so why not for education?

I think The PPP program was a life line for many buisnesses.  However, one buisness that was featured in this artical should have to pay that money back and not forgiven.  My Daughter had a wedding scheduled at the log cabin in October of 2020.  Well based on all the limitations placed on venues it was decided that we had to move the wedding to another location.  I spoke to the wedding planner (nicole) from the log cabin and stated that we have no choice to change what we are doing and requested a refund of the  money i put down.  Was told that we would not receive a refuind of my deposit ($14000.00).  I then requested to speak to a manager and Steve Rosskothen (owner) returned my call and reiterated that a refund would not be given.  I know i am not the only person in this situatiion with the log cabin.  He is making out on the customers money and the governments money.  I did not want to cancel they could not fullfill the contract.  Now i have to go to court.  Not right just wrong

Based upon age demographics and use of the Internet this computer based approach by the Town Manager is likely to disenfranchise many senior town residents from voicing their opinion as to the future of Longmeadow. To compensate there should be some significant effort by the Longmeadow Adult Center to provide seniors with opportunity to input their opinions to this survey.
 
This is especially true since Kim King, Longmeadow School Committee Member advocated at last Monday's meeting that the School Committee utilized School Dept resouces to make sure that parents fill out the form to support schools.

The upcoming Longmeadow Town meeting to hear Grants warrants on guns is such an awful, misguided effort that will not do one thing to improve safety in Longmeadow. The town does NOt have a gun violence problem. Grant acts like he lives in Chicago. Grants proiposed rules is not about guns at all. Its all about Grant trying to show he can CONTROL people by using UNCONSTITUTIONAL rules to violate the CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS of people. The US Constitution trumps Longmeadows town ordinances or by laws or wahtever. The Supreme Court has already stated clearly that people have a CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT to self defense using firearms if they are not disqualified for having certain criminal offenses on their record. In fact, these people have been investigated by 4-5 law enforcement agencies, ranging from local to federal law enforcement agencies. If a person passes all the hoops one must pass to be allowed to exercise their CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS to have a gun, then these people are probably the most law abiding people in town. They have NEVER been guilty of operating under the influence of alcohol or possession of even a couple of joiunts way back decades ago when in college. No violent crimes on their records. No domestic abuse charges. A person who has EVER had any of these disqualifiers canNOT et a gun permit. I want to know if Grant can meet the same standard.

Grant, if you chose to NOT own a gun, that's your right and I respect your right but you should respect the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES and my rights to possess any gun that is leagl everywhere else in Ma. Who appointed you in cahrge of peoples lives to determine what type of a gun they can own or to say they can't come to Longmeadow from another town, carrying their lawfully possessed firearm and walk on the towns sidewalk. Thats really one of the most stupid things I have ever heard from an anti gun phobe like yourself. No,it THE most stupid thing I have heard yet.

I look forward to the law suits that your stupid proposed rules will bring forward, against you and the town council for violating peoples Constitutional RIGHTS if this rule passes but  doubt the AG will hold it to be Constitutional.

I am betting that there are many more intelligent people in Longmeadow that do NOT agree with you, even if they don't own a gun. This is similar to In The Box in Ludlow, except In The Box also has fresh meals to go as well as frozen items. We get food there about 2 or 3 times a week! It's really neat to see the food being prepared right there on site.

Very little chicken found in the chicken pot pie.  Had one big onion right in the middle of the pie.  Heavy on the onion sauce as well.  

The eggplant parmesan was undercooked and very doughy.

Really?  As far as I know no one has died from shopping at the Big Y or from eating a bagel!  When they renovate, clean up that space too .  True , Big Y does not have to allow them to stay.  However, many many of us want them to be a part of the new Biy Y store. It is Longmeadow....!

OF COURSE THAT'S ALWAYS THE WAY.  RENNOVATE AND THEN MOVE.  SO IF THE NEW CALL CENTER COMES TO GREENWOOD CENTER, THEY WOULD HAVE A NEW KITCHEN.  OH! Gave this place a shot, wanted to like it, chicken pot pie was pretty bad which is a shame since it's a staple New England meal. Will head to Frigo's next time. This place is lots of hype, lacking quality, let's hope they improve, would love to see more options in town (bakery, good breakfast spot, good pizza by the slice, etc.).

A senior center in Bliss Park is ridiculous.  Not only will it ruin the park but it will create traffic in a heavily congested area, create a hazard for children in the park and those walking from school, block access to the woods, take down beautiful trees and replace them with a 20000 foot structure and asphalt parking lot.  This is crazy and the town needs to fight it.

It saddens me to see Longmeadow will be a community of cars. 0ne hundred new  parking places for a Super drivethru CVS and the yet to be named high end shop.  Cars to the high school, cars to blueberry school.  Cars to and from East Longmeadow. Cars coming to a Casino in a few years.  The comfortable town now has a strip mall and and is the gateway to a casino.  sad.

What we need is new business in the town. We need another decent restaurant/bar. Maybe a book shop. Longmeadow needs more culture and business.

I have worked with many different people on the School Committe in Longmeadow.  Brownyn, without question, understands the role of School Committe (which by MGL is policy, budget and hiring/evaluating the Superintendent).  She is dedicated to that role and is a dynamic, collaborative member of the committee.  She is a tireless advocate for the disctrict and understands the balance between school and town needs.  I enthusiastically urge everyone to vote for her on election day.

The article fails to mention the primary focus of the building for over 20 years! A "Children's Center" with dedicated staff that served hundreds of families for decades. The building not only housed a full day/year round child care center, for infants-preK, it offered a before/after school program, other extra curricular actives (music, dance, gymnastics) but also had a summer camp program. It is a place where teachers stayed and several of the children came to work as they grew up.

This article is lacking half the story. The building was Adult center AND CHILDREN'S CENTER !  Our children attended pre-school, before/after school and summer camp there. The classrooms were used daily by happy children and highly professional educators. What are the plans for our families and our kids?? People come to Longmeadow to raise families!!!

This only tells half the story. Greenwood was also home to a wonderful daycare, preschool, before/after school program and a summer camp. My children have been a part of all the programs at Greenwood and it has been a huge part of our family. As a healthcare worker Greenwood was a close to home option for my children to accommodate my work schedule.  Not many child care facilities have hours to accommodate healthcare workers. I always felt my children were in the best of hands and always came home with wonderful memories to share.

There seems to be unanimous disappointment in the overall direction the event has taken, no longer highlighting small, local business and vendors, Longmeadow residents and its history. It feels this would largely be attributed to the responsibility of those responsible for approving all applicants and vendors. Maybe a more refined criteria and stricter approval process for hopeful vendors rather...let's "revamp" and improve, not cancel.

I read with interest in what you are all saying.  I wsa born and barought up in Longmeadow, and I have been a part of Long Meddowe Days since its inception 35 years ago.  It has been the highpoint of my year.  I was chairman of the event for several years.  Mario Vega is my son-in-law, and he with the help of my daughter and my husband, have put on the parade and the community campfire also for many years.  It has always been one of my pet peeves....that it was getting too commercial with less interest in the local vendors and craftes.  I for one would like to see Long Meddowe Days continue...but in a much smaller basis.  We do not have to use it as a fund raiser looking for commerical food and craft vendors...just those groups within our town.  And it would become a meeting place for all of us to have a lot of fun and also to support our local groups and programs.  I have been in charge of the non-profit community groups, the kids crafts, and the entertainment on the stage for more years than I would like to count.  This is where our local groups come into the picture.  I have been asked by the Longmeadow Historical Society to be the contact person between our board and the rest of the community with any questions (such as what to do when) that may come up.  Perhaps we could talk near the end of the summer...maybe even have a meeting in my backyard if that is permisable by them for any person or group in town that would like to help with the planning and the contiuance of Long MEddow Days.  I can be reached at 567-7420 or laurhatch@aol.com.                                                                                                                Laurie (Brgham) Hatch

When we moved to the community 30 plus years ago, the Long Meddowe Days was a highlight for our children and for us. Each year we would see friends and learn about important community organizations.  It would be wonderful to bring that back, with a strong focus on local artisans and crafters and continue the wonderful information about the history of Longmeadow and the area. We have new generations that really would welcome learning about this and being a part of this great tradition.  I know that relying on community volunteers is exhausting; but it's also an important backbone of our community and civic engagement.  So, host a sign up sheet and let's get the volunteers to do the work--with support from some paid staff.

unfortunately the budget Busters are often mandated by Mass General Law or local labor contracts. Such as pensions or employee/retirees health benefits. Debt service is a significant factor for next decade even without a new middle school .

The value of homes is held up by the quality of the educational system. No easy choices going forward as long as State continues to support inner city local aid to the detriment of suburbia. This recession has eliminated the possibility of any State reconsideration of unfair local aid for suburbs in education, transportation or unrestricted.

The good doctor/author must be living in an alternate universe.  The pandemic has proven to be a boom for the housing market as supply can not even keep up with demand. And while the health care care industry is also booming due to our overpriced, highest cost of medical care of anywhere in the industrialized world, everyone else in every other industry is suffering deep losses.

So yes, our town of Longmeadow needs to reign in spending and closely examine the budget to bring fiscal restraint in line with the current reality. Unlike the Federal government, citizens can not ramp up the printing presses and create more cash out of thin air.  There is no reason we should have the HIGHEST TAX RATE IN THE STATE, unless of course the town managers feel that continuing to sell off land to Bay Path University is a good idea.  That will certainly guarantee that we will for many many years to come.

Dr. Lam, Thank you for your most informative, even-handed article on this issue.  Now I understand what is before us, and why.  It is surely an important decision before us.

 

My parents have lived in Longmeadow for 50 years.  I and my siblings went to Longmeadow High School (the old one), and had a great foundation for our personal and professional lives.  I now live again in Longmeadow (5+ yrs), and am a caregiver for my parents, now in their 90s. We live on a fixed income and continue to like living here.

As a long time resident and visitor to my parents, I have witnessed many significant improvements to the Town.  Including a fine new High School, a coming new Adult Center. traffic improvements to Longmeadow St, a much needed new Public Works Garage, and many more I am sure I am unaware of.

But I am aware from past public meetings that the long term demographic of the Town is aging.  It maybe that it is time for the sensibilities of the Town to change, too.  For us, working to keep future tax increases as low as possible is increasingly important. Last year's change in garbage policy hit my family hard.  I don't care if this law was on the books for a long time.  It could have been changed.  The one barrel is extremely small.  It is now not only much more expensive to use the blue bags, but a considerable inconvenience to be sure we have them on hand.  We comply in the name of sustainabilitity, but an equally real result/effect of it is as an unwritten tax increase in the Town.  I am not the only person who feels this way.

Our average tax bill may be lower than the eastern localities of the State, but the area's salaries don't meet the levels of these eastern localities, either.  

I was dismayed to read that the Town will not in effect receive additional tax revenues from the new medical facility on Dwight Rd for 20 yrs.  Because the revenues will be going to pay for the considerable traffic, sidewalk improvements required for the project. I know that this was surely the result of extensive and complicated negotiations that were before my time here. But my perspective with having a Masters in City Planning from Columbia U, working in the NYC Dept of City Planning and then in advising/research on major real estate investing for pension funds (JP Morgan, LaSalle Investment Mgt), etc, over 20 years, is that the Town should have reaped more financial benefits from this project than waiting 20 years for these improveents to be paid for.  Hind sight is 20/20 I know, but this was a very valuable project for BayState. Not so much for the Town, it appears.

I am hoping we continue to work hard to find ways to increase the revenue for the town.  There's some good suggestions given by neighbors on the NextDoor app.  I hope they will be considered. There is a very valuable piece of real estate at the corner of Bliss Rd and Laurel St - where the tennis courts are.  In my 50 yrs here I have never seen tennis played on these courts, or any other use for this matter.  I know this is very sensitive given it's the corner of the park, but really, a completely unused major corner in Town has me wondering if it couldn't be used for something better, tax revenue generating even.

The March 5th event at the Brass Rail meeting house was not a brunch; it was a large event in the evening. Contact tracing is a reality when there are multiple cases linked to an event because COVID-19 is spread quickly among people who are not socially distanced and do not wear masks. The virus is like a spider-web. If 10 people test positive and have exposed others without knowing it, ie: are asymptomatic, it can quickly escalate out of control if those 10 people do not isolate, and close contacts do not quarantine. Or if cases do not inform close contacts that they tested positive, the transmission rates can become higher. So yes, in 7-10 days, there can be 40-50 others involved based on testing, symptoms and individuals not adhering to mitigation protocols. Until the elderly and most vulnerable populations are protected with the vaccine, it is our community responsibility to keep others safe and healthy.

On a whole, this sounds nice but I want to know if the neighbors in that area were informed that the Budd youth assessment center (JAIL) is right there among them. Did they get a say, did they even know about? Other neighborhoods say no and get what they want but I do know that the East Springfield area never gets a choice of what happens there.

With only 29% funded you need a return on actual invested  "assets" of 008/0.29 = 27.6% to get a return of 8% on the MUCH greater Plan "liabiliteies".

Anyone with even a modicum of common sense know that this Plan is going belly-up in perhaps 5 (maybe 10) years.  Don't you feel ANY obligation to suggest that your employees develop a "Plan B" WHEN (not "should") that occur?

There are no questions to ask. This wasn't a brawl, but a fight between three individuals. In addition, a simple search of "casino fight" will yield a large number of hits. Even in the swankiest casinos on the Las Vegas strip has experienced some sort of altercation from time to time. 

Can MGM prevent that from happening at MGM Springfield? The obvious and simple answer is no. No one can predict when two individuals may have an argument that escalates. And no one can predict how many additional people may get involved. Whenever you have large crowds and alcohol, there's always a risk of an altercation.

Freight will never go away, and it will always delay passenger service. Can parallel tracks be built in the existing right of way so there is no conflict, instead of purchasing the freight line?

Springfield also needs to think about ways in which it can be more of a destination. I believe it lacks the kinds of attractions that will lure people to visit and live there. That can change.

I am sad that this place isnt as busy as when i was a teenager. its like a ghost town now and it breaks my heart. this place holds so many memories for alot of people my age. this is where most of us went to meet boyfriends back in the day. my fiance and i went to the movies a year ago and we were the only two people in the movie theater watching the movie. i remember when you had to be early to get a good seat. people need to stop shopping online so much.  its hurting small businesses like this mall. my favorite mall. i dont want to see it get shut down.

as I said to Mayor Sarno a couple years ago that a Christmas Tree Shop as well as a Target store would be a big attraction for people at the Eastfield Mall location. Our infrastructure has been ignored. But every time we improve it, it is used as an excuse to raise taxes. So where did the tax money go while the infrastructure was allowed to deteriorate?
It went to help other countries who do not particularly like us. Some of it even went the lab at Wuhan. And it was passed by those Congressmen who are now lamenting the state of our infrastructure.

Will it generate jobs? When Franklin Roosevelt was president a construction project required hundreds of people. Now it results in a couple workers operating equipment imported from Japan.

I will be very surprised if anyone whose job was deemed “non-essential” by our illustrious state government ends up with a job as a result of this “infrastructure” program.

Viewpoint not seen in other media ...On Sunday, 08/26/2018 several very dedicated people completed their 50 mile walk from Worcester to Smith and Wesson factory in Springfield . On their way in they were joined by hundreds of supporters who were brought by bus and joined the march a half mile before the target destination. There were hundreds of protesters from each of two opposing viewpoints. Both were against gun violence but had different opinions on how the goal should be achieved. The differences of opinion could be seen by their signs. One side had “vote out the NRA”and “love children not guns”. The other side : Restricting good people will not stop evil”,”lawful gun owners are not the problem”,Teachers are armed in hundreds of school districts google it” and “guns save lives up to 3,000,000 each year” which included a link to a 2013 study ordered by President Obama. Smith and Wesson had instructed all of it’s employees to stay away from the event and not be involved in anyway. Interestingly, there were over 20 hand painted “I (heart) S+W signs brought in by others.

The "Second Amendment" group (almost half of whom were women) were lining both sides of the street over an hour before the others showed up. It was made clear they had a legal right to be there but all graciously moved over to one side when a police officer suggested it would make the walkers more comfortable and help to avoid any possibility of confrontation. The day was a good example of diverse people expressing different viewpoints and all are to be commended for good behavior.

 

PS. New laws are useless if current ones aren’t enforced. Major points missed or ignored: Nicholas Cruz used only small capacity magazines and, as a known violent person, was federally banned from owning any and all firearms. Federal law prohibits gun possession by anyone who is violent, uses drugs, has been convicted of driving under the influence (no guns involved) and even owning a medical marijuana card (even if it has never been used).

Our house contains many, many of her sculptures.  A manta ray was my first piece I commissioned from her back in 2013.  

We also have 3-4 of her ‘evil snowmen’ sculptures.  Our daughter has a potted plant and we’ve commissioned plants for gifts.

my favorite of all the things I’ve seen is her animal memorials.  So much detail.  I’ve seen a few of these in person and am always awed at the precision and life-like features and painting.

A lot of things in the museum are interactive such as tablets and a lot of these were off due to social distancing measures. Nevertheless, my family and I had a fantastic time and the space section was our favourite.

The rate is not the issue. The issue is how they billed residents if a new rate goes in effect 01 JAN 2018 how can the city of West Springfield bill someone for usage in 2017. This practice is unethical and not fair. Here's some of the answer I received.

There are roughly 9,000 sewer bills that go out each quarter and these are broken into blocks of about 3,000 per month, for the 3 months in the quarter. When the City Council was discussing the needed increases in the sewer rates over the past two years, to take care of the maintenance issues that the DPW comes across in any given year, this question was not asked or discussed in any of our meetings or brought to our attention. I apologize that this was case. I am told that this is the way West Springfield has done it for decades every time there has been an increase in either the water or the sewer rates. Unfortunately, the city council does not control the billing department or set the billing policy. I am told that no matter what date the city council had chosen to increase the sewer rates, because of the way the billing cycle is done, someone is always left paying this increase in arrears. 

 ME: Thanks for the fast reply. My issue is not the increase on the sewer. I understand that we need to upkeep our infrastructure. It doesn't mean that because it has been done certain way for decades is the right way. If this is a policy where can I find this information.

Answer: 

 I suspect it is not a written policy, for it has been in place so long.

Manny,  WOW!! is the first word to come to mind aftwr reading this interview.  Since we began working next to each other at Five Corner Cuts I have developed such respect for you.  I knew you had to go to dialysis and would come to work tired and not feling well, but I never knew the extreme conditions you deal with on a daily basis.  You're strength and fortitude are beyond admirable.  Now I understand where that stubbornness comes from! You maintain strength and have the ability to excel at your job and keep a sense of humor about it all! Kudos and applause for you, Manny! I am grateful to know you and work with  you. I    knew  there was going to be a problem when it was built in back of  the houseing building...Some kids got into the building and took alot of our movies, than took the remote controle and threw them out side.......Now i dont feel safe......need the police to  partrole   this area

As for Senator Donald Humason's reported remarks, are you implying voters should vote against decriminalizing marijuana because its use inexorably leads to heroin addiction?  If you are then perhaps we need to outlaw milk, because except for a very small number of persons with an allergy to milk, all heroin addicts drank it as kids.

Westfield and the Health Dept.

   Way to go - getting Polystyrene banned from your city's restaurants - on a health perspective. But, getting it only out of the restaurants is only half the problem. When people can still buy it - to eat and drink food out of it, it is still a health hazard.  In CA we hope to bring the whole state into compliance in 2017.  This 'stuff' should have never been allowed as a food container, and it's about time that we've all come to realize the health and environmental issues involved with using it.

I wanted to throw out one comment about Paula Dubord's concern over sewer vs. septic at the Main St. location: Sewer connections on Main St. stop at Tinkham Road, so unless the town decides to expand the sewer lines beyond Tinkham, a new Senior Center there would have to go with a septic system.

We had a group of 14 celebrating my father's 97th. birthday.

When my daughter ordered an appetizer she was told she couldn't get it because we were sitting in the dining room and not the bar. The appetizer she wanted is only on the bar menu.

She asked if she ordered it at the bar could she bring it back to the dining room to eat it. She was told by the owner, Gina “no". Instead of allowing this item to be ordered we were told that they would move all 14 of us to the bar. This Is a birthday party for 97 year old. A bar is not the setting for that.

My daughter gave a negative review because of this.The owner, Gina came out to the table and confronted my daughter on her review. She then told my daughter that it wasn't fair to give a negative review. Gina then said that she was going to allow my daughter to order the appetizer but when she read her review she decided not to.

She then told us that we are not allowed to come back because of the review. She did this in the main dining room in front of other customers. She was very disrespectful, rude and obnoxious.

As for the food, the meatballs were inedible, two pieces out of three of prime rib were tough, the spaghetti was terrible and one of the chicken franceaise had no lemon.

The potatoes were cold. The scallops and salad however were good.

This owner, Gina has no right being in this business. She doesn't know anything about customer service and to ban someone because she didn't like the review is cause for a law suit. I guess she thought we were stupid enough to want to go back.

The workers said she was in the back fuming over the negative review. Guess she has an anfger problem to have to attack someone because of a bad review.

Gina and Mike even went to my daughter's work to try to get her fired for leaving a negative review on this same night. A police report was filed in her behalf because of their actions.

You neglected to mention that I had said that I had spoken to their architect and that he admitted that he hadn't done a "survey" of what needed to be done to Memorial School and couldn't substantiate the cost to bring it "up to code" . Roy Brown who is an architect, a resident of Wilbraham and has done a report on Memorial School and all of the Town Buildings as well as a mantenance report on them. Aspestos in floor tiles do not need to be removed. Airconditioning would be an expense in either Memorial School or a New Building.

Memorial School could house not only a Senior Center but also the Recreation Department offices and Veteran Agent's office with the balance of space dedicated to senior/veteran housing. Funding could be sought for each use. I think this is the best use for Memorial School. A letter to the Wilbraham-Hampden Times editor was supported by another one agreeing and several people have come to my office to tell me of their support for this option.

The voters at the Town Meeting will decide on which direction we should go. The committee made their decission without having all of the needed information.

The Selectmen withdrew the article because is was demonstrated that it was ill-conceived, badly thought out, expensive and was actually nothing more than an a special interest article that would not be of benefit to the Town.  The State rejected the Town's grant request for $2 million because the plan was not meritorious, the Town of East Longmeadow wanted nothing to do with it, and neither did the City of Springfield. Yet the Selectmen continued to push for it until the last moment when they realized it was heading for an overwhelming No vote.   Not to mention that one of the Water and Sewer committee members who were supposed to be independent was paid $165,000 by Greathorse--clearly a conflict

My understanding is the lawsuit agianst the school district came as a result of Hamden feeling devalued and ignored in the decsion making process to merge the schools. A merge that Mr. Bontempi championed at the time. Allowing him to continue on the school committee will likely result in continuation of valuable voices being ignored. Mr. Bontempi has made no attempt to work with communities of color and has made numerous comments during school committee meetings indicating an attitude of indifference surrounding the needs of minority communities in our district.

The community needs voices who value diversity, inclusion and equality. Not "teaching tolerance" a statement Mr. Bontempi made during a school committee meeting this fall. The school committee needs voices who understand child development, education and systems of oppression. Further, it needs new people who will ensure our students are ready for a multi-ethnic/multi-global world. Lisa Murray and Dagmar "Dasha" Mechem are those people.

It would be interesting to learn how this has affected each Town that HRRC serves/ed. All communities should have the information freely as to be able to decide what Town officials are doing is in the People AND Town's best interests....as we do vote for these things. I am a person living with an unresolved mail delivery issue. I live in Easthampton Ma. When I went to my local branch instead of being helpful the post office work s brushed me off and said that there’s nothing they can do. That they send all the mail out that comes in to the office. Another Supervisor have implied that I’t doesn’t make sense that I’m only getting my junk mail. As if I was making it up. It shouldn’t have to be a struggle to make sure that we get our mail. As US Citizens we have the right to get our mail on time. The costumer service at my local branch is horrible! They are most unfriendly and not willing nor want to help me in getting this issue resolved. I am luck that I know how to get my bills paid automatically online. But this doesn’t resolve the poor customer service and these undelivered mail issues.

It's heartbreaking seeing Commerford Petting Zoo return each year with all their wild animals (kangaroo, lemurs, zebra, etc.). It's not just outrageously cruel, but unsafe too. These animals are poorly cared for and elephant rides are always unsafe, especially when the elephants are forced with painful bullhooks to walk around in circles on pavement with loads of people on them 12 hours a day for 17 days straight. I'm so glad you mentioned their 2006 incident in Marlborough. To say that the ordinances are his own creation and then to have them use the exact same wording as the Lexington ordinances which are DIRECTLY taken from the Highland Park , IL ordinance drafted by a lawyer from the Bloomberg organization Everytown for Gun Safety is dishonest.

The reason they are using that wording is that the US Supreme Courst refused to hear a case to overturn the Highland Park ordinance therefore the Bloomberg groups assume that is their best chance to dodge the constitutional issues raised by the Second Amendment.

THis is not an isolated local issue this is a concerted effort to attack legal gun ownership using the Highland Park model and the references to Newtown CT are taken directly from the playbook provided by Everytown for Gun Safety.

It was recently reported on Next Door neighbor that putting up an antenna on your house the old fashion way would allow you to get about 30 channels.  It would be worth it to me not to have to pay the cable bill.  You however are hoping to get a special channel and cable does not allow a cafeteria plan.

Visual art seems to be an area in which the non-expert somehow feels qualified to achieve insights equal to those who have spent their lives developing critical skills in seeing and making, and understanding the context in which artworks are meaningful. It is simply intellectually lazy to suggest that artworks (should) disclose themselves equally to everyone without requiring effort. This is typically premised on the idea that an artwork’s success is in direct proportion to the degree that it resembles some bit of reality. This is false, and precludes appreciation for other, equally beautiful and moving forms of composition. While tastes are subjective, they also are cultivated, and the visual language used by artists has many objectives, all of which are ends in themselves. Artworks are not merely formal objects of craft, but living moments of poetic reflection that record the artist’s engagement with her imagination, the world and the artwork itself. Not all will appeal universally, but to argue crudely against an expansive appreciation is to willfully restrict possibilities for pleasure and meaning.

As a educator, I inform my students that they are not, in fact, entitled to their opinions about anything; they are entitled precisely to what they can successfully argue for. Mr. Flannery’s tone is disrespectful, and evinces an obstinate refusal to engage beyond his own limited idea of legitimacy, and it is clear that he has no framework within which to make, much less support, his hostile claim. He seems to take it personally that anyone—artists, of all people—would be in a position to call him out on his ignorance. There is no shame in not knowing something; only in thinking that one knows it all.

A thoughtful survey of art history, time spent seeing local exhibitions, and some conversation with actual artists would be an easy remedy for these mistaken assumptions. I invite Mr. Flannery to sit in on one of my classes anytime.

I have lived practically my whole life in town and am not aware of us ever having a gun problem. I am not a gun owner and really don't plan on owning a gun however I have to say this matter begs the question, why are we wasting time and energy on a non-issue?  Why can't we vote on matters that are urgent to our safety instead of making up unnecessary new rules. How about addressing the drug problem in high school? We have lost several precious lives over the years due to drugs and zero to gun violence.

In an interview conducted by WGBY,  Alex Grant claims his gun ban petitions are his own idea and are motivated by incidents of gun violence, particularly the anniversary and memory of Sandy Hook, Newtown CT.  However, the petitions he filed are exact word for word, cut & paste copies of petitions filed previously with the Town of Lexington, Ma.  This strongly indicates that these petitions are not Mr.Grant's original idea, and he is simply acting as a foot soldier for a much larger anti-Second Amendment consortium. This logically calls into question Mr Grant's sincerity of motive, and whether he is practicing deliberate deception.  Sadly, for those who attack the Second Amendment, the end justifies the means.

I'm looking at this and am a little concerned because the writer has clearly missed hearing that WiFi is a toxin. Where I live, there is alse of modem and router, but those components are hard-wired with Ethernet cables. This means, the connection to the modem, router, and multiple computers are wired with Ethernet cables.

This is a safer option, but also often more reliable and less susceptible hacking.

While a short-term annoyance to figure out how to hard-wire successfully, in the long-term hard-wiring has significant advantages for physical and mental health.

Your question should be "Does a ban on the carry of personal firearms by lawfull citizens result in more crime?"  The obvious answer is YES.  The only thing that prevents a criminal from committing a crime is the uncertainty of their sucess.  This is why all Dictators, terrorists and criminals have as their first priority the disarming of all law abiding citizens.  Let us remember that the only reason the Japanese did not invade America in WWII is that they knew that American citizens were armed and that there could be a gun behind every tree.

Id discovered some of the best underground music by listening heavily to college radio in the 80's. Id discovered punk rock , ska, and new wave in the late 70's/ early 80's and never looked back. Id record the shows on  cassette tapes and acquired a cheap musical library in in is manner.( In the late 90's and early 2000's, Id pirated a lot of music from sites like nastier, lol)

 

alas, I find little music I like on radio these days. I just listen to clark howard on my little  hand held analogue radio.

 

i truly detest a lot of the Mellienial expressions. I think they're born of social media. Hipster culture strikes me as pretentious and silly. Lol, I'm no old fart either; just a veteran punk who reviles mainstream popular culture like the very plague it is!

We are indeed a nation of laws but of great individual liberty and to preserve that great individual liberty, the right to free speech, religion and the right to bear arms,  we had individual States making provisions according to the individual composition of that State to avoid the consequences of those liberties and laws...

About 185 years later, I was pledging my allegiance nearly every day to one nation under God and was taught what that means. I have gone from seeing no need to locking the doors to my house to locking them every time I turn my back and more. I have seen jails grow in size from a regular house to a large warehouse and the courts become larger. We once worshiped in the House of God but now I see many worshiping in their smartphone and such.  Sentiment has also changed over the years from obeying the laws to I am entitled to have the police and government protect me, an entitlement society. In addition, from the streets in our communities to halls of academia there are shootings reported almost every day, some 235 years later.    

 

Yes, government has always enforced the consequences of not obeying our laws but the people, the individual once enforced and upheld our social contract and duty of individual responsibility independently, by choice and free will. We once looked up, around us at the people that surround us, helped each other uphold our social contract and moral obligations between us, taught this to our children and did not have our face buried in some smartphone all the time. We did not ignore those suffering from mental illness and other troubles, we did not wait for the government to do something but we did take the individual responsibility to solve the problem our selves. We once understood that our liberties, immunities and privileges are dependent on this social contract between us, and we were taught this in our childhood, schools and from the great leaders we once had, all this seems lost today.  

 

You may cry gun control all you want but the real problem is within the communities and each individual, you do not need to be particularly religious although it may help some, we need to restore the individual responsibility, piety and morality of which is our foundation of all our liberties as it is written in our laws.

I have noticed that elected officials will respond to letters and phone calls when they are running for office, however, once elected good luck on getting a response. For example: I have written a number of State Officials concerning front License Plates; a person buys a 40 thousand dollar car and the first thing they have to do is drill into the Cheap Plastic Grill and ruin the appearance of the car. Car Owners do not like front plated, Dealer Do not like them and not one new car sold in this country is designed for a front plate. Also, I cannot find any statics that  states, “The absence of a front plate ever caused a problem in the 19 states that do have them.” So why not put the use of the front plate to a vote of the people.”

How do I get the senior citizen discount with Charter? I moved to Chicopee in 2013 and was told there is no such discount.  Just last week I was told the same thing when I called trying to reduce my ever increasing cable bill.  April 1st issue of the Reminder states the new contract includes said discount.  Thank you.

That action is going to create so many problems because a miilion people are going to try to take the turnpike and not have a transponder in their vehichle and will be fined for taking the pike anyway and driving through, or not beable to use the turnpike.

Leave the toll booths, it works for everyone as it is.

What the government doesn't make enough money to pay the employees?  Wrong, each person in a toll both averages over 200 an hour.

For the past 8 years I was involved with the concert series and the past five years I was in charge of bookings, vendors, media relations, marketing and operating the event every week.

I was not asked back this year as they told me they "want to diversify the event".

Not a day has gone by where I get a call, email or tagged about the dissatisfaction of this year and the changes that were made.

I recently attended one of the new "destination bike nights" and I was humbled by the reception from dozens of people there. Many of them I did not know but they certainly knew me.

Many asking me "where are you going in 2016".

I wish the SBID the best of luck with the new "city block" series but by making the changes they did, they have literally detached from the thousands of people that came for the music, food, fun and yes...to walk and tour the bikes that lined the streets every Thursday night.

Again, I wish them the best in thier endeavor and hope they are pleased with the new "crowd" they are trying to attract.

While I have access to streaming, etc, here in spfld, it's rather an expense for low income people.  For example, one has to subscribe to cable or satellite, or get a landline phone connection. Add to that bill the cost of streaming. For my tablet, I have a $30 data plan, and it's by no means unlimited. So, all that to say, to watch movies isn't possible for me unless I received the DVDs from Netflix that I do in the mail.  I can connect to my landlady's wifi, which she is kind to share with me, but when watching Netflix streaming thru a free month's trail, there was a lot of buffering.

I'm all for the composting of food scraps!! I'd love such a program. it troubles me to throw out garbage that could, instead, be composted.  A friend who lives in NYC freezes her food scraps then totes them to a local composting center.

 

id wondered what to do with used clumping cat litter...currently I throw it, like people do with dog waste, in those ubiquitous plastic grocery bags.  

 

I try  put my purchase most times in my duffle bag or cloth bags.

 

i hate when restaurants use  styrofoam containers.  Much better to use the heavy cardboard ones or even plastic containers one can rsuse or recycle.

 

dunno, but I can easily see people protesting reduction of plastic bags... The same demographic who uses disposable diapers, and throws them in the street gutters.. Basically the people with the typical Lazy & entitled mentality.

We travel South once a year. those states, lilke N.J. have a toll booth as "cash only," We don't need a transponder to travel to Fla. even tho they do have E-Zee pass.....We travel to N.H. once or twice a year, and live here 5+ months...I think you should consider a "Cash Only" booth...Why not??....

We do have a home in Western Ma. but live there  maybe 3 months out of a year...We really do not want to sign up  for  a transponder, and we will  swap cars in in the fall of 2017.. (we do every 3 yrs.)

I could not agree more - last night's concert was just okay ( the acoustics were okay, there was a crowd) but the atmosphere is just different -and kind of boring.  I miss the bike show, the bikers and the atmosphere that the concerts used to have.  To me it seems as if an entire 'class' of people have been told they and their money are not welcome. This is very unfortunate.  The best part of the concerts in previous years was the diversity.

It's not up to the corrupt State Legislature to set the tax rate - WE set the tax rate at 12% when WE enacted this new law.   The law doesn't allow the Alcohol Commission to regulate cannabis, it creates a new, parallel Cannabis Commission.

 

The legislature send helicopters and SWAT teams into 80-year-old grandparents back yard to rip up their gardens.  That's what your beloved crooks decided to do until we reigned them in.  As well as arresting black people at 4 times the rate of whites, despite equal rates of usage and selling.

All they can do is implement the overall picture.  Anything else is in conflict with mass constitution.  Some change may occur, per say.  But, saying no growing is out of the question.  There trying to delay it, and eliminate it.  Probably on behalf of the existing medical industry.  Jump to 2018.  What is open today for medical shops may be closed.  90% of that law is the 6 plant limit.  I can see them having to leave it alone, or risk litigation changing it.  Its not like slightly changing a tax rate.  Having secret talks about this stuff and trying to give the law a hair cut is basically illegal per ma constitution.  Polls risk public safety with a delay in shops.  A swift opening of them ensures the market will succeede legally.  Anyone can brew their own beer and grow their own tobacco, should they want to.  At the moment, its just not worth it for most people.  I see the same trend occuring...

I was sorry to hear that your publication has discontinued distribution of the paper in Southwick.  It has been part of the different papers that have circulated in town for a number of years.  Some of the news items of the area were unique and not covered by other media in the Springfield area.  It is important that the public reads material from various sources rather than from only a few. 

From business events including the recent Northwest Ireland trade mission to the Knowledge Corridor it has been good to see Mr Dobbs at these events and information published in the newspaper.  Those of us in Southwick and other communities no longer in your circulation area may continue to seek out your publication in print in other towns or online.

I totally agree.

While I willl be the first to say that the bikes/ers brought with them some bad things, I feel that, in general, it was a safe environment for all. 

Certainly it was FAR more crowded.  I am sure the business are feeling it - Adalfo's, FatCats and the parking lots, the square itself were all largely vacant last night.  A year ago - the same music and weather would have had all those business packed and jumpin'. 

I find it hard to believe that the businesses are 'happy' with this development.  As a consequence, I hope the city hears about 'til they decide to change their phone number so they don't have to hear it.

I applaud your rail study column and appreciate your "tell it like it is" approach to all your writing. Here's my contribution to your request for dealing with those "zealous zucchini".

Zucchini Bread

3 eggs-beat well

2c. sugar- mix well with eggs

Add:

1 c. oil

2 C. raw grated zucchini

3 tsp.vanilla

Add 3 c. flour- combined with the next 4 ingredients:

1/2 tsp. salt

3 tsp.cinnamon

1 tsp. baking soda

1 1/2 tsp. baking powder

Fold in:

1/2 C. nuts, raisins or chocolate chips (I vote for chocolate chips)

Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hr. Makes two loaves.

They (the B.I.D.) need to open their eyes if they think businesses are not suffering, I was there for the Jon Axis concert, (crowd near the stage half as dense as usual) and as soon as the band was done I went over to Fat Cat's and saw them closing of one of their patio bar stations, NEVER saw that happen before on a summer Thursday night before! The band was asked by management to stop at 11:30 instead of 1:00 because there were only 4 customers left outside at 11:00, this is NOT second hand information, this I SAW personally. A manager at Theodore's ALSO told me face to face, that their numbers were down the first Thursday night.....this was after a man with the B.I.D. told me Theodore's had a very good first Thursday night. Glad I decided to ask for myself. I've been going to these concerts from the beginning, and the vibe that the bikes gave the event was it's heart, that is no longer there and that saddens me.

Not everyone should carry a gun - but so called 'gun free zones' have proven to be nothing but open invitations to terrorists and mental cases.  Such regulations do nothing to prevent crime: the murderers, like other criminals, do not respect or fear the laws or regulations which they violate.  If one armed private citizen had been at those sites of tragedies he or she might not have been able to prevent all the murders, but the amount of victims would certainly have been smaller.  Those who oppose the carriage of firearms do so out of ignorance and fear: education should be their first step, rather than denigration of gun owners and citizens who lawfully carry a gun.

I am a woman, and I am all for women's rights (legitimate rights, that is, such as owning property & voting).

But no woman has the right to kill an innocent human being, even when that human being is in their body (womb).

Science confirms that life begins at conception, as evidenced by ultrasound images.

Therefore, the "fetus" in the mother's womb is alive and human at every point in its development.

As far as women's rights, approximately 50% of the unborn babies who are murdered by their mothers in the womb (or even after birth, as sanctioned by states such as New York & Vermont) are female.  They would thus grow up to become women if given the chance to be born.  Why is there no respect for these future women's rights - the first being their right to live?

Cuomo want to kill babies in abortion so desperately that they now allow newly-born babies living outside of their mothers' wombs to be killed by "doctors" who are not preserving life but destroying it.

'Simple' is a common word found throughout this article.  "simple fact" and "simply wrong" are just two examples.  The fact is: There is nothing simple about this issue at all.  

Dr. Seuss enterprises absolutely has the right to stop distributing that property.  These books were deemed "unacceptable by modern standards".  Cancel culture is the removal of material "deemed" inappropriate.  Who "deemed" them as such and why do they get the final say?  In many cases, yes, opponents have overreacted.  The issue of 'Potato Head' could well be one of those overblown cases.  However, the problem is too many items are being "deemed" inappropriate as many still disagree while their opinions are disregarded.  The reasons given: "racism", "non-inclusive", "offensive" are all subjective and are applied to items many do not see as problematic.  Any one of these issues by themselves might be insignificant, but the problem is with the trend.

We need conversation.  We need conversation that considers all points of view.  This is an extremely complex and subjective issue.  Proponents of these trends believe the final word has been established and anyone pusing back must support racism, non-inclusivity, and offensive material.  What's actually happening is that proponents of the issue don't see they are forcing their perfectly valid opinion on others who don't feel the same.  

In reference to the last statement, we do agree.  We don't agree on what qualifies as negative.

Well Mike let's start where we both agree that it is time for action and we can not rely strickly on prayer. As a moderate member of the NRA, I think you are putting too much emphasis on their role in the gun problem issue because their purpose is to kept the rights of the 2nd ammenment alive and to make sure that politicians do not disarm us or pass laws that will require magazines to be gold plated and limited to two rounds. You do not mention that government failed us in the Sutherland ,TX. case with the Air Force failing to report Kelley (the killer) to the FBI about his domestic abuse past. You also dare to bring up Australia, a country where most American white middle class people would not meet their stringent immigration requirements while the the USA accepts dangerous poverty stricken people from South and Central America with MS-13 being a prime example. Anytime you can muster the will to deport dangerous non citizens, I am willing to reduce my 2nd ammenment rights. An effective method that was quite sucessful in NYC was when the police were profiling individuals and frisked and search them and found many carrying a firearm without a permit. Attach a 25 year sentence to that crime and you have just reduced gun deaths by at least 80%. Currently, we have a revolving door in our courts and a slap on the wrist when it comes to firearm violations due to our P.C. culture, therefore our politicians will never do anything constructive to avoid the bigot or racist title and they will attack soft targets like the NRA or the Christian church. I find that you are too hung up on military style firearms since all firearms are dangerous of every caliber and the emphasis should be on those that carry without a permit. The record kill is a .22 short (air gun power) that took down a 2000 pound draft horse fired a half mile away.

Excellent comments on what you learned in 2018.
 What I learned was that State Representative Angelo Puppolo could avoid debating me and answering my questions about his voting record. I tried to arrange debates with Channel 22, the Republican, Reminder, Wilbraham-Hampden Times, Public Access TV's, League of Woman's Voters and none would agree to set one up. The questions I would have asked were and which were against the interests of his constituents were; recording all votes enabling easier access to his voting record, posting the addenda on their own website every morning, giving legislators 24 hours to study upcoming legislation along with supporting documents etc., defining " emergency legislation" and what qualifies to be voted on as " emergency legislation" which is what their pay-raise was passed and why did he vote to not even put up for a vote on limiting the Speaker's term to eight years? All of these questions were in the ads I purchased in two of your editions, E Long & E FPK and the Wilb-Hamp Times.
I wonder how many of your readers read those ads? And why they would vote to reelect someone who voted that way?
 
I think the Speaker of the Massachusetts House has too much power because he appoints the committee chairs who receive extra pay if they receive those appointments from him. The Speaker of the US House of Representatives no longer appoint the Chairmanships, they are voted on by the members. I think Massachusetts should change and do likewise. By doing so the chairmen/women would no longer be beholden to the Speaker and his interests which are close to Boston.
 
Also I think that we as their employers, as taxpayers, should have the power to say if, when and how much of a raise we want to give them, as our employees.
 
Both of these items need to be put on the ballot and voted on as a Binding Referendum The legislators will not do that so we need to do it ourselves by getting the signatures required, to get it on the ballot as a Binding Referendum

I agree and appreciate this column. I couldn't have said it better myself. Our Legislature gave themselves a Christmas pay-raise and the Springfield City Council was emboldened and gave themselves one as well.
I think the Employers/Taxpayers should decide by a referendum if and what they should be paid. They knew what the job paid when they ran for the position.

Dear Mr. Dobbs,

First of all, let me apologize for the length of my comment. I think I wrote twice as many words as you did in my response, but I only did so because I believe this stuff is vitally important.

I'm writing this response because I think you tried to address a bunch of issues in a short article and, unfortunately, you didn't really get to the heart (or truth) of any of them. I agree with a good bit of what you said in the article but I think you are missing some critically important points…especially when it comes to the Black Lives Matter movement, as you’ll see the majority of what I write below addresses BLM specifically.

Let's start with COVID-19. Is it real? Yes, people are dying and it's horrible. Should we be wise about how we interact with people for their safety and ours? Yes. You mention some of the issues people are having with some of the restrictions but you're missing the point. People are overreacting on both sides of the issue but the reality is that politicians, activists, and others are using COVID-19 (a crisis where many people have died and are still dying) to push their agendas and use it as a power grab. Just do a search for "using covid-19 to further their agenda" in Google (for more liberal results) or DuckDuckGo (for more conservative results) and see what comes up. You'd think we'd all want to work together to get through this, but that would be ignoring the fact that we're all sinners and we want what we want. If we have to use a worldwide crisis to get it, then so be it. That is the sad reality and it can't be ignored.

Next, I want to address Black Lives Matter. Since you capitalized the letters BLM, I'm going to assume you're talking about the movement and not the general idea that, black lives matter. I, of course, believe whole heartedly that black lives matter. I believe most everyone, aside from the most ardent racists, would agree with that. All human beings are made in the image of God and have inherent value and dignity regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, ability, etc. However, based on your comments, I'm wondering if you've actually looked into what BLM is all about. I know with certainty that the majority of people supporting BLM have no idea, and are just hopping on the bandwagon or are afraid of being called racist if they don't support it.

If you go to their own website and read their "What We Believe" you will see that there is much more there about other issues besides "trying to address centuries of injustice that people don't get." And at this point, I don't think they are so much trying to address it as they are trying to erase our nation's history and destroy what is good about our nation's founding. Slavery and racial injustice are stains on our nation's history for sure, but erasing them instead of dealing with them and learning from them will just make matters worse. I'd like to address a few things about BLM here, but there are many more that I don't have the time or space to get into.

  1. BLM is anti-family. Here is a quote from their website,

"We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and “villages” that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable."

The family structure is not "Western-prescribed", it is God ordained. They must have missed that Sunday School class.

  1. BLM is anti-America. Here is a quote from Patrice Cullors, one of the founders of BLM,

“We actually do have an ideological frame,” Cullors said. “Myself and Alicia are particularly trained organizers — we are trained Marxists. We are super versed on ideological theories…”

I'm not going to address your Constitution comment, "Does it say anything about this being just for white people?" because that's a blatant strawman argument. Who is saying the Constitution is just for white people?

I'd like to move on next to the "all of you who identify as Christians" comment, because I am a Christian. I don't just identify as one, which many people do who have no idea what Christianity is about and think it's just the Golden Rule or social justice or a million other unbiblical things.

Christianity is about Christ, hence the name Christianity. More specifically it's about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It's interesting how everyone knows the Golden Rule but nobody can live it out perfectly. Why is that? The Bible tells us why - "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). Why is that important to know? Because "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). This is where the Gospel comes in. The second half of Romans 6:23 says, "but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord". The Golden Rule, while important, can't get you to heaven, even if you lived it out perfectly. We are all sinners and stand condemned by a Holy God who can not allow sin into His presence. We must be in Christ, which means we are trusting in Him alone. Our righteousness is not enough because we are imperfect and even our good deeds are tainted with sin (Isaiah 64:6). We must be "clothed" in the perfect righteousness of Christ. He lived a perfect life that we can't live and took the wrath of God that we deserve when He died on the cross for the sins of all those who would but trust Him alone for salvation and forgiveness. Only when we believe the Gospel and trust in Christ can we be saved.

Jesus is the answer to all of the problems facing our society. However, I'm under no delusion that all people will suddenly embrace Christ. Just after the Golden Rule passage of Scripture we see this, "Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few." (Matthew 7:13-14) and, "Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’" (Matthew 7:21-23).

I really appreciate your last paragraph about what we can do to help. However, I don't think it accurately sums up what came before, specifically regarding BLM. You seem to defend what they're doing, but don't acknowledge that they are calling for Defunding Police, not police reform. You don't acknowledge their radicalness (if that's a word). You just sort of glossed over it and I believe that is part of a huge problem in the media. As a journalist, you have a responsibility to report what is true, regardless of the outcome. I think the media, especially the mainstream media, is causing more harm than good by not being honest about the BLM movement. At best this is irresponsible, at worst it is an intentional attempt to deceive the American people and destroy America as we know it.

As a Christian informed by Scripture, I know there is real evil in this world (Jeremiah 17:9, Romans 3:10-18, et al.). I think the majority of people in our country/world think people are basically good. This is because we judge goodness by human standards and not by God's standards. This is a naive worldview which causes all kinds of trouble. We need to realize that there are forces at work behind all that is going on and we can't always take things at face value. I'll close with this example.

Black Lives Matter, according to their name, should be all about improving, protecting, empowering black lives. But instead, they are working to tear down our country and reshape it because of slavery and a supposed "systemic racism" that is "built in" to our government, laws, systems, etc. They are fighting hard to tear down statues and rename buildings, sports teams, etc. I agree that some of these things are good and necessary. But are they are consistent in their application of their cause? No, because there’s far more under the surface.

Let's take one example, Planned Parenthood. BLM and Planned Parenthood claim that they are united in the fight against racism. However, Planned Parenthood was started by Margaret Sanger, who was a true racist and wanted to "exterminate the Negro population". Planned Parenthood even gave out an award in her name: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Sanger_Awards. So why is BLM not trying to tear down Planned Parenthood? Removing Mr. DeJoy from the Postmaster General posiion is clearly necessary and vital for the future of the USPS!   I, like so many others, see no common sense in Mr. DeJoy's quest to "stabilize" the Post Service.  Unlike efficient and productive companies (Amazon,  UPS or FedEX) "he" chooses to slow deliveries, tried to elimate automated machinery and removal of collection boxes!  Does he personally use today's/current available technology--- or does he still use digital dial-up service,  landline phones or mail communication services?    Please remove him from this position before he makes additional, irreversible damage to the USPS!

I will respond to this.

First of all the casino is way too small and is a real letdown when you compare it to the casinos in Connecticut. 

Where is the entertainment?  Come on, your telling me that having Stevie Wonder and Cher 8 months later is the best they can do?  I mean, look at the competitors and see every week there is some form of entertainment. 

Smoking .This to me to have a 100? smoke free casino, while may be great for personal health, just doesn't fit in a casino .not to have some section designated for smokers .

When you add up all it has and doesn't have, to me to have spent years developing and allowing casino gaming in Massachusetts it was just done wrong and it is unfortunate .

Now, is it good for Springfield, absolutely and for the city it was a huge win.  For the people around the valley like myself. It was a collosal waste of money .

Did they anticipate or fulfill Spfld needs or expectations? Not really. They have been struggling to get it right but it is MGM & Spfld that are hindering it further

1. The facility is 100% smoke free because they are governed by MA state law not tribal laws.  They couldn't allow smoking if they wantes to 

2.  They are small because that is the space they were allotted. The orginal plan was for a tall building but Spfld said no.

3. They wanted more hotel rooms but Spfld said no.

4. The math is simple. No space equals no big entertainment.

5.  Yes, the job cuts are happening due to a corporate wide cut. Spfld has been impacted & jobs are being eliminated as of next week. This is not just management. Sad for employees who depended on and rooted for MGM...

For myself it’s purely about the big guy (MGM) coming into town and pushing around the little guy (local businesses) either pushing them out all together or hurting business for those businesses for years. While MGM built the casino. I worked at a restaurant on Main Street in the south end. The construction caused the city to turn Main Street into a one lain road for almost 3 years.... the place I was working got suffocated by this, and also the fact that 91 had exits closed that made it easier to to get us. It was a major headache trying to navigate the city at that time. Long story short, we had to close the restaurant. Sure a lot of people work there and I guess it’s helped the city (I have no evidence one way or another) but it was also a colossal inconvenience for everyone for a really long time.

A museum is a place for history,  historical artifacts and the like. It is not responsible for political correctness, it's a place to show past history, something you may or may not like. The problem is that people today can't decide what they want to see and skip the rest, it has to be made not offensive to them. What will they do if their kids become offensive, drop them off at a police station? People have no patience and no concern for others. We are now a "give me what i want" society!

Massachusetts Gun Laws should be coppied by other states. The problems would decrease if they were. People who say semiautomatic guns are the problem, don't understand what a semiautomtic gun is. A revolver/ six shooter is a semiatomatic gun because a shooter needs to pull the trigger each time a shot is to be fired. No Private Person should be allowed to own a Fully Automatic Firearm, only On Duty Military. Anyone caught with a Fully Automatic Firearm should be subject to Jail time.

If all the guns are taken away from law the abiding citizens, as some advocate, then the criminals will have them and the rest of the populace will be at their mercy 

Gun Free Zones only assure potential terrorists that they will be able to kill without any resistance or retaliation. Conversely, if Qualified Licensed to Cary People are in these buildings, these terriorist will be either deterred or shot by the people who are Licensed to Carry Firearms.

I just read the comment that Angelo Puppolo said "The conversation never took place" as I quoted in an article in the Reminder and your reply was that you will fact check better in  the future. The conversation did in fact take place, in his office and I don't know how you could fact check it.

Angelo Puppolo also denied that he voted for the Pay Raise, which was reported in the Republican, Globe, Herrald,MassFiscal, Beacon Hill Roll call ---. He had flyers inserted into the Wilbraham-Hampden Times denying he voted for  the pay-raise. There were 9 Democrats who voted against the Bill but he wasn't one of them.

  Just because he says or denies something doesn't mean it isn't so

I am a 36 year retiree of the USPS. Yes they are not perfect but they are there 6 days a week year round. They protect the eldery and infirmed or homebodies as well as being the good neighrbor that we sometimes do not have on our streets.

The system is only built on shareholder monies. Who are the shareholders? The citizens of the USA. We support the agency with stamps, packages and other various services provided by the number one trusted company in the USA, Go ahead Google or run through Scopes, It is a fact

Mail more letters, tell your legislators, write the President to keep our service to provide communication for a fraction of the cost of other businesses.

It would be a great idea, considering the hassle with the banks today, three hours to see a teller at a drive up window, to make the Post Service a banking institution in every neighborhood in the USA.

This business must be kept alive and well, support it and write about it, What have you got to lose .55 postage to California or anywhere in the USA within 3-4 days. Or even a money order for $1.50.  Can any other business match that?

It is not Rep. Neal's receipt of contributions from defense contractors in itself which is objectionable it is that those donations come from firms that since 1995, have had 269 instances of misconduct leveled at them by government auditors for ripping off taxpayers and the U.S. Treasury with case after case of fraud, waste and abuse in weapons systems and other contracts and have paid out more than $4.6 billion in fines. Columbus Day was instituted in 1892 by President Harrison to honor the Italian-American community and their contributions after the 1891 mass lynching of Italians in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was supposed to show the enduring unity and permanence of Italians in this country, and to remind us of how fat we have gone in this country. Yet, the abuses didn't stop. More killings of Italians occured. The first to oppose Columbus Day were not indignant indigenous tribes but the KKK who defaced Columbus statues and attacked Columbus Day parades. In opposing Columbus statues you are basically advocating for the removal of the culture of a historical minority and see aligning yourself with the KKK. We are grateful for your consistent insight. 

In your September 21-27 issue you asked about the 'second economic development act' for Springfield.  I'd like to respond to that question at a later date.  Today I'd like to comment on your second question regarding a 'community's measures to combat climate change'.

Working in the environmental field as a businessman on Gasoline Alley and co authoring a text book on sustainable business, I find when we use 'climate change' to describe environmental issues it automatically dismisses all those that do not believe in 'climate change'; consequently, we will only be talking to ourselves.  What are the common quality of life indicators that everyone can agree upon?  And, how can we identify, measure and improve them?  We will find that answering these questions will automatically bring us back to the environment.

To consider we are separate from the environment makes as much sense as thinking we are God.  We are not separate from the environment.  Everyone breathes the same air in the Valley.  Everyone drinks the same water from their community.  Every tree gives off oxygen and sucks in carbon dioxide in every community.  We can find many more connections if we look closely.

Unfortunately, we dont eat much of the food from the
Valley so we are not immediately connected with our food.  We dont extract oil from the ground locally so we are not immediately connected to our energy sources.  But, these are the opportunities to create a thriving sustainable business environment.  Thinking about things from a different perspective.  Thinking about them with the understanding that we're all connected and thinking about what we all have in common and work from there.  Color, sex, ethnic or religious background, taste, attitude, its doesn't make a difference when we find and go after what we have in common.

The beauty of the provincial nature of Springfield and its environs is that we can create our own sensible sustainable community, once we agree that that's what we want to do.  Its when we concentrate on our own self interest that puts the obstacle in place.

Lets not combat climate change, lets combat the business climate.  I'll send along my comments on "What happens if the Casino fails?"

You can't sit in the shade until you plant the tree.  While I may be pushing up daisies 20 years from now, my 20 something Grandchildren will be looking for jobs and permanent residences.  Having high speed trains available will certainly make career and residence decisions easier for all AND eleviate some of the automobile conjestion that will only get worse as time goes on.  I also encourage us "older folks" to take a train ride.  When was the last time you actually rode the train.  In the past 5 years, I have been on a train about 10 times (high speed in France as well) and believe it or not, it's a very pleasant experience AND I would certainly take more advantage of it with high speed available.  Trips to Boston from Springfield are scarce, more are needed.  Springfield going south is more available.  I vote Yes, high speed!

I would like to see more community information available to the local area on what's happening in Somers. I am the Somers cultural commission chairperson and we are having a great series of events beginning May 1 at our outdoor gazebo behind the senior center and this is available to all people all ages and free of charge. A free will donation is welcome at each concert.  Last year we had such a tremendous appreciation for and turn out of our summer and fall concert series. That is the reason why I would like to make it more known throughout the area because this year we are adding a spring concert series. Normally we have a photography show in the spring indoors and because of the pandemic we are going to postpone that for another year in 2022. But this is a terrific way to get outdoors and enjoy music that binds us all with all kinds of music for all ages. Please contact me so that there could be a feature article on the events coming up in Somers.
