LONGMEADOW – Lots of restaurants serve sandwiches, but not many do it quite like Posto, a recent addition to the Longmeadow Shops.

The editorial staff of Reminder Publishing’s East office sized up the sandwich offerings at Posto. Speaking for myself, I was not disappointed.

Walking into Posto, the decor of subway tiles and exposed galvanized ductwork anchored a minimalist look, in spite of the Italian words and phrases boldly painted on the walls as art. Everything about the place said, “upscale, modern Italian,” including the food.

How could I not try the Italian sandwich? I love a good Italian grinder and was excited to see how Posto would treat the classic.

I can eat, but this sandwich was large. I could barely get my mouth around it and there was plenty of food to leave me full and wanting a nap – the hallmark of a good meal.

First, let’s talk about the bread. Bread goes a long way in my appreciation of a sandwich. The small Italian loaf that the sandwich came on provided a satisfyingly crunchy outside and soft inside – perfect.

When I took my first bite, the word that sprang to mind was, “zesty.” That was largely due to the pepperoncini, of which I am not generally a fan. In this case, it was a nice addition to the flavors of the salami, mortadella, prosciutto, provolone and giardiniera. I could taste the e.v.o.o. (extra virgin olive oil) and vinegar, which bound the ingredients without leaking everywhere or making a mess – a hazard with some sandwiches.

The french fries that were served with the sandwich are a cousin of shoestring fries, which I generally find unsatisfying. These defied my expectations, however, as they were seasoned well with enough potato to be satisfying.

Overall it was a nice, upscale take on an Italian grinder. At $14.95, it was pricey but worth the amount of food and the flavor.

If you’re heading to Posto and want to try the Italian or any of their other sandwiches, lunch is served until 2:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Posto is located at 674 Bliss Rd. in Longmeadow.
