NHL offering unique ways for fans to get their hockey fix

April 29, 2020 | Dennis Hackett

If you are like me and are experiencing hockey withdrawals as this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs were scheduled to kick off back on April 8, there are plenty of ways to try and fill that void.

Last week we took a look at some of the top NFL games available on YouTube, and while the NHL is doing the same, the current library is a bit lacking with just 12 games available and only adding three each week. Many of the games are also much older and date all the way back to 1967 with just one game from this century available. Fortunately, there are some other ways to get your hockey fix as we wait for a decision on the remainder of the 2020 NHL season.

At the time of writing, NESN is nearing the end of its rerun of the Bruins 2011 Stanley Cup run, culminating in a replay of the victory parade on April 22. Once that wraps up the station will continue to air Bruins’ classics, including replays of matchups with the Montreal Canadiens, the Buffalo Sabres and even the Hartford Whalers from the late 80s and early 90s.

The NHL is also offering a slate of classic games every single day on NHL Network up until about 7 p.m. The highlight of this week’s programming is a marathon of the complete six game series from the 2016 Stanley Cup Finals between the Pittsburgh Penguins and San Jose Sharks on April 24.

Currently the best way to fill that hockey void in your life is on the NHL’s website. Once you sign up for an account on their website you can stream every game so far from the 2019-2020 season completely for free. It is a bit difficult to find the games themselves on your browser since you have to go to NHL.tv and then click under the schedule header pick a date up until March 11, but once you do that all of the games from this season are available. However, the process is streamlined on the NHL app on a smartphone, smart TV, or gaming console since the most recent games pop up immediately once you open the app.

While the NHL is offering its games in a bit of a different way than the NFL and NBA, hockey fans still have plenty of ways to fill the puck sized whole in their hearts as we await a decision on a potential return for NHL hockey this season.

Next time, we’ll be taking a look at some of the best NBA games on YouTube, along with some other ways to fill the basketball void during the current self-quarantine.
