WEST SPRINGFIELD – Classes are coming to a close and it’s time to start planning summer activities for children ages 7 to 12. The rich, educational environment at Storrowton Village’s Early American Summer Days provides a learning adventure, Aug. 7 through 11, in the historic village in West Springfield. From 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., children can experience the historic life of a youngster of bygone days.

Try on” the lifestyle of the past by stepping into 19th century New England. By offering children a unique, hands-on approach, they can expect to make unforgettable memories that will make their summer one to remember. The week is packed with interactive games, crafts and activities to reflect the life of youth in the old days. 19th century clothing is provided for each child to immerse them in the realistic experience.

After donning their traditional clothing, each day will consist of a new activity. Children will participate in some old-fashioned fun by singing and dancing to live music of the 19th century, making one-of-a-kind crafts to bring home, such as woven baskets or handmade candles, to becoming an “apprentice” of a blacksmith. They will even get the chance to visit an authentic one-room schoolhouse, write on slates and use quill pens to get a taste of school lessons from the past.

In the kitchen, children will help with the cooking chores by milling corn into meal, learning to milk a cow or goat and churning the fresh milk into homemade butter and cheese. Lessons on carding and spinning wool and how to weave cloth from fiber teach children how clothing was originally made. The adventure ends with a chance for children to share their experiences with family and peers. On the last day, parents are welcome to watch their children perform a skit onstage, admire their artistic creations and newly learned skills, and to take a guided tour of historic Storrowton Village.

Youth ages 14 to 15 are encouraged to serve as volunteer junior counselors at the five day camp and take part in this outstanding opportunity to work with youth, dress in authentic clothing of the era and learn more about the 18th and 19th centuries through the eyes of children. Please contact the Village at 205-5051 for more information.

An experienced and knowledgeable staff is on hand to guide participants through educational, interactive, and fun activities designed to delight and challenge children. The cost is $165 and families with more than one child registered for the program will receive a $30 discount for the second child.
