SPRINGFIELD – Before being brought on to the reporting staff at The Reminder, I would read “The Best Damn Sandwich” articles whenever they were in the paper; They have been at places I liked to eat and were even on display. I remember seeing my colleague; Payton North’s article hanging at Rice’s Fruit Farm in Wilbraham and thinking it was the cutest idea for a local paper.   A little over a month of being on staff here, I was asked to come along to get a sandwich for our next round of “The Best Damn Sandwich” articles. I was thrilled.

G. Michael Dobbs, Stephanie Trombley, Payton North and I all went down to The Souper Sweet Sandwich Shop located at 929 Belmont Avenue in Springfield. I had never been before but remembered driving past the store front in the past. Walking in we were all immediately hit with the aroma of fresh bread, making our mouths water.

The elaborate menu is displayed on a large black board hanging on the wall across from where the sandwiches are made. We all agreed to get a different sandwich in order to try a wide variety of options that Souper Sweet had to offer. It ended up being a tough call for Payton and I as we discovered that day we had very similar taste in sandwiches, but I decided to order a sandwich called “The Pest You’ll Love”. The description of The Pest said, “Avocado Pesto, Fresh Mozzarella, Sundried Tomato spread and Arugula.” One of my favorite meals is a caprese salad, so ordering The Pest You’ll Love seemed like a no brainer.

Each sandwich is served on white bread, heated with a Panini press and cut into three pieces. All four of us had the pleasure of pulling apart our sandwiches and seeing the melted cheese separate and stretch between each slice.

The Pest You’ll Love the best name for this amazing sandwich. If you are like me and love a good caprese salad, this sandwich will be right up your alley. The avocado pesto is a perfect pair with the sundried tomato spread, which gives the tomato taste without making the bread watery like tomatoes often do. The mozzarella cheese was creamy and had melted to an ideal consistency after being toasted by the Panini press.

After the sandwiches, as if we weren’t all full and satisfied enough, we also all sampled three desserts from Souper Sweet as well. From their wide array of desserts we chose lemon bar, sweet potato pie, and cheesecake. I was pleased to find that sweet potato pie was the crowd favorite among our reporting team.

My first Best Damn Sandwich was a success! I am looking forward to doing more of these with my fellow reporters who are some great people to eat sandwiches with.

I absolutely recommend Souper Sweet Sandwich Shop to our readers. Between their delectable sandwiches, tasty soups and sweet desserts, Souper sweet is a must go!
