Recycling packaging materials, learning to compost

June 3, 2020 | Elizabeth Bone

Here are two questions that I’ve been asked a lot lately:

Question: I’m ordering a lot of packages, can I recycle the packaging?

Answer: A lot of the packaging is recyclable. Amazon type packaging made with bubble wrap on the inside and plastic on the outside, or plastic bags can be recycled with plastic bags at local stores such as Big Y or Target in their green bins in the front of the store. Try to peel all the paper labels off. Packages with the paper on the outside and bubble wrap on the inside should go in the trash. Any air bubbles inside boxes used to protect your items can be popped and also put in with plastic bag recycling.

Question: I want to start composting, what’s the best way to start?

Answer: Composting is really easy and has great overall benefits. All you need is a container for your kitchen, and an outdoor space or compost bin. Compost bins are available online, or through your town’s home composting program. Compost bins require 25 percent greens and 75 percent browns. Greens would be any vegetables, fruits, or grass. Browns would be egg shells, coffee grounds, tea bags, paper, straw or leaves. After you’ve collected some kitchen scraps, bring your items out to your compost bin. Drop them in your compost bin, and add some leaves, or ripped paper. Use a stick or shovel to give it a stir. Each time you bring your scraps out to your compost bin, make sure there are more browns than greens, give it a stir and keep it moist. This will help keep your compost from smelling. In four weeks to six months, you’ll have nutrient rich compost to add to your lawn and gardens.
