AGAWAM – Mayor William Sapelli announced the reopening of town buildings starting April 5 with the exception of the Senior Center.

“Most of the elderly population are still completing the second dose of the vaccine and since they are the most vulnerable population, we want to give them a little more time,” Mayor William Sapelli said.

Senior Center Executive Director Michael A. Squindo stated there would be a soft opening starting with a potential outdoor program at the local park.

“We are working with the Board of Health, Parks and Recreation, and the Mayor on a reopening plan and when we can open. It’s not just when but how and what that will look like. We want to be safe with the return,” Squindo stated.

All schools, grades K-12, resumed to in person learning for students five days a week on April 5.

With traffic expected to be heavy during drop off and pick-up times. The mayor emphasized the importance of following drop-off rules and procedures.

“We are open and glad we have been able to open schools, teachers have done a great job throughout this time,” Mayor Sapelli said.

Inspection offices, public buildings and the library are also open.

The library was open three days a week with curbside pick up prior to the resumption for in person this week but is now open five days a week.

Hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and grab and go services are available on Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

“You can’t get inside the building on Saturday but if you have holds or crafts, you’re picking up you will have access to that then,” Director Nancy Siegel said.     Library protocols follow the mandatory mask and 6-foot guideline, along with keeping the visits to 45 minutes or less if possible. Meeting rooms will remain closed.

“If you have any questions don’t hesitate to call. We’re happy to help people over the phone, online, and still providing home delivery if folks can’t physically come into the building,” Siegel said.

They have established mobile printing services and now provide WiFi that reaches outside of the parking lot even after hours.

Siegel has announced that they will be unveiling a chat service some time next week.

“That’s another way to reach us at the person’s convenience, to be accessible right from our website,” Siegel said.

As part of the protocol for Town Hall, there will only be one person allowed at a time into the Treasurer/Collector’s Office. Visitors are to remain 6 feet apart with a face mask. Masks will also be provided if needed. There will be staff in the lobby to ensure that social guidelines are being followed.

“We encourage people to use electronic alternatives for payments, the drop box provided outside the door as well as mailing services. We are seeing some light at the end of the tunnel but let’s continue to keep everyone safe,” Sapelli said.
