AGAWAM – It’s been twenty-five years since “Hocus Pocus” first premiered in movie theaters. Agawam Cinemas changed that on Oct. 5, when the theater hosted a one night showing of the classic film on the big screen.

Agawam Cinemas hosted a full Halloween event, ending with the showing of “Hocus Pocus.” Halloween surprise grab bags were available for purchase, and an inflated M&M dressed as Frankenstein’s Monster greeted guests at the door.

The concession stand included the usual movie theater favorites of popcorn and candy, but the cinema added a couple of spooky treats for the special evening. Large Halloween cupcakes in hues of green and purple, garnished with witch hats and zombie arms, were up for sale. In lieu of a soda, guests had the opportunity to sip on an iced apple cider while enjoying the show.

The Disney film flopped when it first hit theaters in July 1993. “Hocus Pocus” grossed a mere $39.5 million. The budget for the film was $28 million. Media response to the movie deterred others from choosing to watch it, and it was regarded as a bust…at the time.

Now, “Hocus Pocus” is considered a cult classic. Spirit Halloween stores are packed with costumes, stuffed toys and kitchen supplies based on the movie. For it’s 25th anniversary, three separate limited edition releases of the DVD hit stores. As of 2015, DVD/Blu-ray sales of the film grossed over $21 million, making the movie ultimately profitable.

With a little bit of 90s nostalgia and the constant replaying of the film on the Freeform channel’s “31 Nights of Halloween” event, “Hocus Pocus” has become iconic, and the opportunity to see the movie in theaters was not one that was taken for granted.

A line of moviegoers trailed out the door as people waited anxiously to enjoy the movie for its birthday. From senior citizens to young children, the crowd varied, but all guests agreed: Halloween just isn’t Halloween without watching “Hocus Pocus” at least once.

While AMC Theaters will be hosting showings all month of the film, the closest theater is located near Boston. Agawam Cinemas gave Western Massachusetts Halloween lovers an opportunity to enjoy a favorite film on screen that they may not have had otherwise.
