AGAWAM – The Agawam Cultural Council has announced that it is seeking applications for grants to be used on cultural or artistic projects. Between Sept. 1 and Oct. 17, applicants may submit proposals for projects that will take place in 2023. Funding is available for a variety of purposes including exhibits, festivals, short-term artist residencies or performances in schools, workshops, lectures or historical interpretation, according to a press release issued by the council.

The Agawam Cultural Council, like similar boards in many communities in the state, receives its funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Applicants will need to submit their proposals through the Massachusetts Cultural Council portal at massculturalcouncil.smartsimple.com.

The council’s 2023 budget has not yet been finalized, but last year’s was $25,685 and council chair Bob Kadis said he expects this year the town will receive even more from the state.

There is no predetermined cap on the amount of a grant award, but applicants should note that grants are paid on a reimbursement basis. Last year, the council awarded 36 grants, out of 40 applications. Awards ranged from $50 up to $3,500. In 2019 and 2020, all proposals submitted were funded.

Prospective applicants should be aware of the requirements to qualify before applying. Importantly, applicants must have a local partner venue in Agawam, although there is no residency requirement. A full list of requirements can be found at agawamcc.org.

Notable 2022 projects include funds for storage and archival of large format documents at the Agawam Historical Association, and an arts and crafts fair hosted at the Polish Club in Feeding Hills.
