Agawam Fire Department installing free detectors for residents

AGAWAM – The Agawam Fire Department is offering free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to residents who live in Agawam or Feeding Hills.

Fire Chief Alan Sirois told Reminder Publishing eligible residents must own and reside in the home. Current smoke detectors must be over 10 years old or absent, and existing detectors must be battery operated; hard-wired detectors are not eligible. Residents also must allow Fire Department personnel into their homes to do the installation.

“Smoke detectors provide the early warning of fire that is essential for occupants to escape a fire safely. The absence of operating smoke detectors is a primary contributing factor in residential fire deaths and injuries,” said Sirois.

Residents can apply online at www.agawam.ma.us/fire or call 786-0657, ext. 2, during business hours.

Sirois said once the department has compiled a list of interested individuals, they will call the residents to schedule a date to install the detectors. He hopes to begin the installations in the next 30 to 60 days.

In previous years, the Red Cross has supplied the detectors and has accompanied the Fire Department personnel to provide home safety information. This year, the Fire Department will install the detectors and provide safety information.
