AGAWAM — Girl Scout Troop 65068 is collecting first aid supplies for Ukraine, through March 30.

The troop consists of 13 girls, ages 6 to 9, and is led by one of their mothers, Vanessa Rossini. Rossini said she wanted to join in to help the people of Ukraine after seeing the efforts of local churches.

Through a Facebook group made up of about 20 Girl Scout leaders of Central and Western Massachusetts, Rossini shared her idea of wanting to start a drive, and asked if anyone would be interested.

Since her post about two weeks ago, Rossini has had responses from two other Agawam Girl Scout troops, along with troops in Palmer, Shrewsbury and several other towns.

Each troop that has agreed to participate in this drive is responsible for assembling the first aid kits, to be placed in plastic zip-lock bags. The three Agawam troops will divide all supplies amongst them.

Rossini said each bag will have 10 specific items. The supply list includes elastic (Ace) bandages, medical tape, rolled gauze, large (4 by 4 inch) gauze pads, extra-large (5 by 9 inch) gauze pads, extra-large bandages, large bandages, butterfly closures, antibiotic ointment and nitrile or vinyl gloves.

Several donation boxes have been set up across Agawam. Locations include Town Hall at 36 Main St., Agawam; CVS Pharmacy at 163 Silver St., Agawam; Agawam Congregational Church at 745 Main St., Agawam; Dazzle Dance Studio at 60 N. Westfield St., Feeding Hills; the Department of Public Works at 1000 Suffield St., Agawam; and all of the town’s public schools.

Once the drive ends on March 30, Rossini plans to collect the kits from each troop and deliver them to Full Gospel Church on Union Street in Westfield, which is collecting supplies to ship to Poland.

“From Poland, they have folks there getting the supplies across the border [to Ukraine],” said Rossini.

Aside from the church, Rossini’s inspiration to help the people of Ukraine came from Bob Charland. Charland, better known as “Bob the Bike Man,” has been receiving donations at his warehouse in Springfield.

As the founder of Pedal Thru Youth Inc., Charland began working with children in 2003, when he led his daughter’s Girl Scout troop. Since then, he has made it his mission to give back to the community.

Charland informed The Reminder that he has two volunteers at his shop, a mother and son, that are Ukrainian. When the mother called up Charland in tears about the devastation back home, he knew he had to do something.

“I shut my bike shop down,” he said.

Now, his main focus is collecting supplies for Ukraine.

Charland noted that he had a lot of supplies already on hand, as he makes backpacks for the homeless. In addition, he received about 600 winter coat donations along with other clothing items and first aid supplies.

Last week, a Girl Scout troop from South Hadley and Granby also delivered “an enormous amount of supplies,” to his shop, he said.

At press time, Charland has shipped one full 18-wheeler directly to Poland, and plans to send another one shortly.

Charland originally agreed to close his shop for three weeks, however, he said he will continue to bring donations to the Full Gospel Church as long as he can.

“It’s people helping people… that’s what it’s all about,” said Charland.

Rossini said if Charland continues receiving donations past March, her troop will continue their efforts and bring the first aid kits directly to him.

“This goes hand in hand with what Girl Scouts is all about,” Rossini said.

She added their work is similar to that of the earliest Girl Scouts, who collected peach pits during World War I.

She recognized that donations could go on forever, but the uncertainty of what’s happening in Ukraine could limit the ability to ship supplies. For more information, contact Vanessa Rossini at 219-4437.
