AGAWAM – The Agawam City Council met on Nov. 15, beginning with a special presentation from Council President Christopher Johnson.

Johnson asked the council to honor Agawam High School golf player Zack Hurley, who recently made a hole-in-one in the practice round for the Western Massachusetts tournament.

“It doesn’t diminish the skill and the honor that it takes, because I personally know many golfers that have played for decades and decades, and have not even come close to making a hole-in-one,” said Johnson. He added that he himself has come nowhere near this level of performance.

Hurley told the council that he was on hole 4 of Oakridge Country Club, 142 yards out, when he made the shot with a seven iron. Due to the shadow over the hole, Hurley said he was unsure where his ball went, as it seemed to “disappear.” Upon moving closer, he said, “I found it in the hole. I was just so excited.”

Hurley was able to share the moment with a few of his friends who were at the hole in front of him. “It was one to remember,” he said.

Hurley was presented with a salutation on behalf of the citizens of Agawam, recognizing and congratulating him for his achievement. The salutation was signed by Mayor William Sapelli and Johnson, on behalf of the City Council.

During their meeting, councilors voted 10-0 to transfer $20,400 from the treasurer-collector’s office staff salary account to the mayor’s office staff salary account, to “help compensate for a workload in two offices,” according to Councilor Dino Mercadante, who chairs the council’s Finance Committee.
