AGAWAM – An Agawam High School senior in the process of earning his Eagle Scout rank used the required project as an opportunity to give back to children at the Robinson Park Elementary School.

Shawn Newsome planned, oversaw, and gathered volunteers to paint colorful images and playground games on the paved lot beside the school’s playground.

Newsome, who is currently working his way towards the Eagle Scout rank, said the idea first came from the parent of one of his friends after a similar project took place at a different school.

And while planning, developing, and overseeing a service project was part of requirements to achieve the Eagle Scout rank, Newsome told Reminder Publishing for him it was also personal.

“I have ADHD, so I know how it’s hard to focus when you’re full of energy,” he said.

Newsome didn’t complete the project alone, though. He had the support and help of his family, friends, and Boy Scout Troop.

“My entire family helped me, my sisters and my parents, a lot of people from the troop helped out,” he said.

Agawam Public Schools Superintendent Steve Lemanski, said he’s happy to see Newsome, a former Robinson Park Elementary School student, setting an example for younger students.

“We are thrilled a former student at Robinson is working his Eagle project and wanted to give back to his elementary school. We have seen this on one other occasion at Clark Elementary as well.,” Lemenski said. “Agawam is a wonderful town where these types of community projects occur. The Eagle project sends a great message to younger students.”

Lamenski said students who are young now may even feel inspired by Newsome later on in life and want to give back as well. “Ten years from now, we may have another Robinson student willing to give back,” he said.
