AGAWAM – Often, life can become a bit stressful. It’s always beneficial to find a creative outlet to help with the pressures. On Oct. 16, Main Street Deli & Restaurant in Agawam will host an arts and crafts event by Southworth Wellness.

Guests will create their own fairy gardens to take home. The garden will sit on a ceramic plate and include silk flower fairies. Christine Southworth, Holistic Nurse Educator and owner of Southworth Wellness will host the workshop. “It’s a great way for everyone to get together, relax and get in touch with their playful self” Southworth shared.

Southworth is a registered nurse with over 25 years of experience. Building on her passion for health, she trained in Reiki and learned meditation in order to continue to help people in creative ways. Now, as displayed on her webpage, she is happy to “bring people back to life with CPR…creativity, play and relaxation.”

In addition to a Nursing degree from Holyoke Community College and a Health and Wellness Promotion BS from UMass Amherst, Southworth has received Expressive Arts Facilitator training and certification in Practical Applications for Creative and Expressive Arts from Salve Regina University.

Her experience has allowed her to bring workshops to Mass Housing, Cancer Connection of Northampton and Hartford Hospital. At Mass Housing, she has facilitated workshops for apartment buildings in Massachusetts. At Hartford Hospital and Cancer Connection, she has held workshops for cancer patients and their loved ones. The fun behind creating proves to be an emotionally healing benefit for those who participate in Southworth’s events.

Southworth has assisted others in relaxation projects such as wellness talks, collages, painting seashells and dot art. Participants in her workshops can expect to truly bring out their creative side. “I like to use natural and up-cycled materials. I like to bring a lot of material to entice people to play. I’m picky about bringing interesting materials that can be used in different ways.”

Working in partnership with Main Street Deli & Restaurant, Southworth has conducted workshops in the restaurant’s large and inviting dining area in the past and is happy to return. “It’s a collaboration with owner Joanne Locke. It’s a community-building event.”

Southworth believes the event is important for the wellbeing of guests. “Being a nurse, I have seen the devastating effects of stress. I wanted to use my holistic background and nursing background to help people heal and feel better.”

As fun as events like the fairy garden workshop can be for participants, Southworth also enjoys each workshop she conducts. “I get a lot of joy in watching people play and let go of the stress of the day. There’s nothing more fun than seeing people sitting around and playing with creative materials.”

The event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at Main Street Deli & Restaurant at 141 Main St, Agawam, MA. Tickets cost $28 per participant, which covers supplies and refreshments. To RSVP, contact Main Street Deli & Restaurant at 821-9881 or visit their location.
